What have you done to your files? Have you tried a data recovery program to take chances?
Nowadays, there are plenty of data recovery programs that are designed to restore the lost files for the user off from a phone/camera memory card or computer hard drive.
So, you can also take an PC data recovery freeware to take a chance:
http://www.freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/02/data-recovery-for-pc.html
In fact, this professional data recovery freeware has helped many people around me restore their inaccessible data off from a phone/camera memory card or hard drive. It could be a good choice for you to go on.
Try to read more detailed information of this data recovery freeware here:
http://blog4mark.blogspot.com/2012/12/deleted-files-recovery.html

Note: You should never save any new file on the same drive in case that anything new would overwrite your original files.
Next time, you should never forget to back up everything important at least on two hard drives.

The first thing you should do is to stop putting any new data on your laptop before recovery to avoid data overwriting.
then search photo recovery software on Google, there are various software on the market. If these photos are really important and valuable for you, I suggest you try professional recovery software asap. According to my own experience, recommended one is Wondershare Data Recovery (because I used it and it helped me recover all my lost photos and videos with nice quality.) It is a wizard designed software so you just need to follow the guided interfaces with only a few easy steps.

Here is the process for if you restored your system using using system restore.

If you just did a solid format then its a bit of a different story for finding and recovering files, even if you do find the DOC they tend to be fragmented, let me know.

Ill also say something again, which if your reading this its more then likely already to late but BACK-UP your files, pictures, important documents. I feel bad every time someone comes to me saying years of their life are gone can you please get them back for me. Many time it can be done, but there are times where it is just not possible.

It takes a little money and at most a few hours to transfer your important data onto a backup drive or DVD's, that can take a lot of worries away,

OR

You can download a software called RECOVER MY FILES which can help recover your files. Visit this link (http://www.whitecanyon.com/recover-my-files-data-recovery.php)

It is a simple, fast program which thorough scan the computer, which allows you to recover lost files
Do not use the machines to take more photos before you have recovered or is likely to override the old and losing it all ....
The program can also use it to retrieve other types of files such as music and video.

Fix pc hard drive

Did the drive crash? Is the computer not recognizing the drive? If so your files are gone unless you want to spend over a grand trying to get them retrieved.

If the computer recognizes the drive but you don't see your files, then a virus has just hidden the files. They are there and retrievable, just hidden.

External WD 1TB. I cannot retrieve my files it says Parameter is incorrect when that is gone It shows there are no files on my HD and there are plenty of files all psd files as well

I'm sorry to say that this may be due to a corrupt HDD. WD Hard drives tend to die far too fast (I know too well unfortunately).
If this is under warranty, I would call up WD support service for a free replacement.
If you want to take more invasive steps, I will be happy to help you try and recover your files.

Reformatted the external hard drive and lost files

Unfortunately, there's no way to retrieve any PC files. Once you reformat your external HD, everything would be erased.

Thank you!

How do I retrieve lost pictures on my Olympus xD card? I think I formatted it without knowing. We have tried 2 different downloads without success. Do the card readers retrieve the pictures?

If it is re-formatted it is likely a lost cause, unless the formatting only changes the directory labels to available--like on a hard drive or the trash can with a simple delete or quick format.
...potentially some of the bit by bit utilities such as used for recovering hard drive data or from trash. [cannot think of the name off hand--like Recuva, Free undelete etc]
..Yes, I would try a card reader. as then you can look at the files somewhat directly in explorer and have the potential for recovery utilities to work, or maybe even read the files (as apposed to through the Olympus which may require the DCIM file labels to function); I recall reading about recovery for photos in particular--but in general the recovery programs look for data that fits a file type structure like MP3, JPEG, Tiff, and will retrieve even partial files--- have successful found portions of mp3 songs but have not had the occasion to try on images.
