2 Answers

My refrigerator continues to go off and on. I have thrown food away both in my refrigerator and freezer twice. The refrigerator is only 6 years old. How can a refrigerator that cost $3000 last only 6 years, when I have one in the basement that is 20 years old and works perfectly. What is the problem with kitchenaid appliances!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Refrigerators , like ovens , ranges , dishwashers , washers and dryers , are going to the electronic board age . It is hard to find a new oven or range , without a digital control . Switches with knobs , are on the way out on most appliances . Front load washers , with the matching dryer , are all going digital . Soon , all appliances will have control boards ( either made in China , Mexico , Korea , among other low wage countries ) which repair will be very expensive to replace these boards . Cheeply made , expensive to replace . Thermostats which had knob controls ( on refrigerators ) are going to thermistors , which the " cold temperatures " , vary the resistance , which the control board consistantly monitors , therfore controls the opperation of the refrig , such as compressor run time , air baffle to refrig section on or off , and the defrost system . Thermistors , can freeze and bust internally , therby sending false signals to the control board , causing different refrig actions . Electronics , in my opinion , will only be good , when someone can take a shower while blowdrying their hair at the same time . Until then , I personally , will buy reconditioned appliances with knobs . Although I know how to work on electronic appliances , I would prefer not to work on my own . I would still have to pay a pretty penny for electronic parts needed . So , you see , it isn't just Kitchenaid , it's all brands and models .

Refrigerator not cooling why

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You have an older unit. Some parts are no longer available.

There are 3 possible component failures:

1.) Refrigerator Adaptive Defrost Control Board - This has the most probability for your problem.
25467327-2wop33oc00rzrbarpm5t54vf-3-0.jpg Substitution: 61005988 Cost $78.00
This is located in your fresh food section control housing. You must drop the control housing to access it.

2.) Defrost Heater - This component is located in your freezer section. You must remove the back wall to access the heater.
The back wall on your model has slots and screws that are both difficult to remove and more difficult to replace. Even harder is the string the wires up through the cooling coil without cutting your self on the razor sharp fins on the cooling coil.

25467327-2wop33oc00rzrbarpm5t54vf-3-2.jpg Substitution: 61006199 Cost: $48.00

3.) Refrigerator Evaporator Fan Motor - This too is behind the back freezer wall which is difficult to remove and re-install.
25467327-2wop33oc00rzrbarpm5t54vf-3-5.jpg Part #: 61005339 Cost: $106.00

Ok, what do we do?

A.) If you know someone who is above average mechanically inclined you may decide to replace the components.

B.) If I were still working for Sears Homes Services, I would leave you with a bill for about $450.00 or more.

Normally a refrigerator should last you 20-30 years.

Your unit is old. You are at the point that components have reached there life cycle. You repair this problem, then 6 month to a year another component is going to fail.

My I suggest; go into the internet and search for Sears Outlet Store (Scratch and Dent). You can save several hundred dollars and will get a one year warrantee.

Go simple. I have a 23 year old Kitchen Aide top freezer.

Stay away from Samsung and LG units unless you want trouble.

Stay away from bottom or drawer freezers. They are high maintenance.

Stay away from units that have either ice makers on the door or ice buckets on the door. When you open the freezer door, warm air from the room will cause block icing. Ice makers and ice buckets belong in the freezer.

I'm not sure which one I have, but purchased my approx. 2 yr. old Kenmore bottom freezer refrigerator from a trusted contractor doing some work in my home. I have a problem with the left produce bin......

Cold air from freezer blows into refrigerator compartment right behind that tray. Freezes stuff in that tray. Pizpoor design. Known issue. With GE refrigerators also of same design. That kenmore most likely was build by GE. GE/Kenmore deny the issue but thousands of posts online about it. No solution. Sorry. Good luck.

I have a GLFU1467FW upright freezer that is about 1 year old. Since I have had I have noticed that there is a lot of freezer burn on food, to the point where I throw it away. It was set at #4 on the panel,...

Freezer burn is caused by oxidisation of the food contained in the freezer bag that has air in it still. Ensure you remove as much air as possible before freezing food.

Moved refrig this morning and now it is not cooling... freezer works great

Hih, Check and see if something has stopped the condenser fan motor down by the compressor from turning. Sometimes this happens in a move.
Also make sure the controls didn't get turned to wrong settings. Make sure evaporator fan motor is working in freezer and that there is no frost building up on the rear panel.
Just some ideas to help you.
lease let me know if I can assist you further.

Changing Freezers

If your products are already in the frozen state the answer is yes, you can make an immediate transfer. Normally a couple of hours run to allow the temperatures to stabilize is sufficient. The cool down run time also insures the the unit is functioning properly. If you plug it in and transfer the products right away make frequent checks to insure proper operation.
