Hi, it could be several things that good do something like this. This is a window unit so the blower/condenser fan motor is a dual shaft motor, one shaft blows air across the indoor coil for cooling, while the other shaft of the motor keeps the condenser coil on the outside as cool as it can and to keep the freon head pressure down. If this motor and all just shut down on you and shut the whole system down with smoke, it sounds as though this combination motor as died on you and burned out the motor windings which will cause electrical smoke. It may have tripped the breaker in the process. I would turn the unit to off and go check your breaker. If it is tripped, turn it off hard and back to on hard to reset it. Go back to the unit and while watching it, turn it on cool high and see if the unit trips out and stops again. If it does, more then likely, you have lost this motor. On a compressor burnout its not very often you will see smoke coming from one unless the terminals blow completely out. I have only seen this happen 2 times in 33 years of a/c repairs. Anyway, to gain excess to this motor and compressor the unit is made inside of the case. It is made to slide the whole inner workings from the inside, (most are anyway) for the tech or owner to work on them. Like a sleeve in a case that slides out into the room. You can also if you have a long screw driver or metal object that is slender and long enough with the unit unplugged, try turning the blade or wheel which ever it has to see if the shaft spins freely. If it does not spin or is very hard to spin, you will know the bearings were going out and this is what caused the motor to overheat and burn out. Try and do these checks for me if you are able, and keep me posted on the out come. If the motor seems to be fine after you reset breaker if it was tripped, we can go into it deeper. Try and keep me posted and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Sincerely,

Hi, checking back with you on this. Now that I read where you said smut on the panel, do you mean like dirty oil? If so, you may have blown the start, run, and common terminals out of the compressor causing it to smoke. If you can get to the compressor, remove the plastic cover where the 3 wires connect to see if there is oil and burned wiring. Did it smell like electrical smoke? I would think so. Please let me know on this. Thanks very much,
