The fuel consumption of a DG or Gas Generator is proportional to the power generated and the frequency  maintenance.
The fuel/air ratio can be adjusted only at one power point or free run in service conditions.

The engine isn't getting enough fuel. Your carburetor needs cleaning. Generators are notorious for gummed carburetors because of the ethanol alcohol in today's gasoline and the generator sitting idle for weeks, months & even years without use wicks moisture into the fuel. Drain your carburetor of gasoline, & remove the carburetor. Clean your carburetor with Carburetor Cleaner spray & make sure the float needle valve & seat are clear of gum & varnish. To help prevent this from happening again, shut off the fuel petcock at the fuel tank and run the generator carburetor out of fuel before you put it away. It'll help keep the carburetor free of gunk. Also, replace the old fuel in the tank with fresh fuel every 3-6 months.

I would like to know the exact ratio of oil and gas of my homelite 720 generator,i lost the manual and i have to be more specific in fuelling it.what does it mean by 50 is to 1? thank you

Find the manual here b> Mixing the fuel The Generator is powered by a two-stroke, air-cooled engineand requires a fuel mixture of gasoline and 2-cycle fuel lubricant. NOTE: Always mix two-cycle engine lubricant likeHomelite's Exact Mix Semi Synthetic Lubricant with gasoline before fueling theunit. Running the Generator ongasoline alone will ruin the engine. NOTE: Recommend you use ONLY Homelite or G-oil® inyour product.( Or any 2 cycle motor oil in this is not available) Use a mixture of 50 parts unleaded regular gasoline and 1part two-stroke engine lubricant (50:1). Use branded 87 octane (R+M+2) unleadedgasoline or gasohol (maximum 10% ethyl alcohol, or 15% MTBE, no methylalcohol.)
NOTE: Always mix lubricant and gas in the properproportions: 2.6 ounces of lubricant to one gallon of unleaded gasoline. To mix the lubricant and fuel together for use: 1. Pour 1/2 gallon of gasoline into a clean gas canor other container approved for fuel storage. Do not mix the fuel and lubricantdirectly in the Generato's fuel tank. 2. Add 2.6 ounces of two-cycle engine lubricant tothe gasoline mixture. 3. Add the remaining 1/2 gallon of gasoline. 4. Close the container holding the gas/lubricantmix and swirl the can to blend contents together. NOTE: Do not mix more than you will use in a month, and shake the container to blend thoroughly before each use. Using an old fuelmixture can cause starting difficulty or damage. DO NOT USE E85 FUEL. IT WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. NOTE: Fuel system damage or performance problems resultingfrom the use of an oxygenated fuel containing more than the percentages ofoxygenates stated previously are not covered under warranty. Ethanol. Gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol by volume(commonly referred to as E10) or 15% ethanol by volume (commonly referred to asE15) are acceptable. E85 is not. Whenadding fuel to the Generator, make sure the unit is sitting on level ground andthat the engine is not hot. Fuelonly with recommended 50:1 mixture of gasoline and lubricant as described in Mixingthe Fuel. Toadd fuel to the Generator: 1. Cleanarea around fuel tank cap, if necessary. 2. Removethe fuel tank cap. 3. Inserta clean funnel into the fuel tank. 4. Slowlypour gasoline/lubricant mixture into fuel tank. NOTE: Filltank no higher than 1/2 in. from top to allow for gasoline expansion. 1. Reinstallfuel cap. 2. Clean up any spills. J

Will 10% ethanol in gas hurt generator? Mine seems to be idling a little rough these days.

I wouldn't say the ethanol is the problem, but perhaps the brand of gasoline. I can tell you that many cars including my own run crappy on certain gasolines (even though all gasoline contains 10% ethanol), when they get older. For example I get horrible gas mileage on Exxon gas, while I get wonderful mileage on Shell or BP gas. Experiment with that a little and if there is no improvement you (or if your not sure how a shop that deals with generators can do it for you) can adjust the idle and check any filters that may be one the generator.

Engine cant run with air filter fitted, I have cleaned it .but the problem remains the same

This means that you are over fueling. There is more fuel going to the carberator than air. By removing the air filter you are allowing more air flow into the carberator, which is allowing the engine to run right. Natural gas and propane generator must have no more than 11 inches of water column. Gasoline engines should have no more than 3.5 psi out of the electric pump. If gasoline is gravity fed, then this means that you need to rebuild the carberator or purchase a new carberator, but try to adjust the flow valve on the bowl of carberator first.
