The light is flashing on the front and it's making a clicking sound. I tried turning it off for a few days but it's still flashing and clicking and the computer doesn't see it.

A clicking noise coming from a hard drive often means the hard drive is bad. But it could just be the case is bad. I would remove the hard drive from the case and try to connect it to the computers USB port using a hard drive adapter. If it works, I would copy your music and data of ASAP. Then you can test the drive to see if it is bad or if the case is bad.

I accidently formatted my Buffalo Ministation HDD, is there a way to fix it?

There are a few ways to undelete files after formating a Hard drive or deleting files, however note that while you might not be able to restore 100% of your files, you should be able to retrieve a few critical files or pictures.

It is important to not write any files to the hard drive at this time.
Writing files to your Hard Drive after deleting files or formatting a hard drive will reduce the amount of files you can recover. Since the Buffalo Ministation is an external hard drive, the process becomes easier than if this were an internal drive.

First off, plug the Buffalo Ministation into any USB port into your computer. Second, download Recuva. (Recuva is a free software that helps recover deleted files.) Install Recuva.

1) Close all other programs
2) Open Recuva
3) The Recuva Wizard will now appear. Click Next
4) You can now choose which file type you want to recover. Music files, image files, any files , etc. Click next when you made your choice.
5) Now you have to choose the location of the external Hard drive. If you don't know which drive letter is assigned to the the external hard drive, choose "On my media card or iPod". This will scan all external drives and devices. Alternatively, you can go to the start menu and click "My computer". When the my computer window shows up, you will see your external hard drive and a drive letter. Once you find what the drive letter is, go back to recuva and choose "In a specific location". Then click the Browse button and click the drive letter assigned to your external drive. Click next.

6) Click next on this final window.
7) The scan will now begin. Wait until the scan is over. Once the scan has completed, a list of files and their file names will appear. Next to the Filenames are icons with different colors. These colors indicate the state of the deleted file, and how well the restored condition will be. Green means the file will be perfectly intact, orange means there might be some corruption, red generally means the file may not be recovered. At this point in time you can choose which files you would like to recover. If you want to attempt to recover all files, click the the check box right next to the Filename box.

8) When you have finished selecting your files to recover, click "Recover" towards the lower right corner of the screen.
9) A box asking where you want to send the recovered files will appear. Click Desktop and make a new folder there. Call it what ever you want. Select the folder and click OK.
10) When the operation is done, a dialog box will appear telling you how long it took.
11) Check the files you have just recovered in the folder you made on the desktop

Voila, your files should be ready to be viewed. If there were files you wanted to recover that did not show up the first time, go back to step 6 and click "Deep Scan". That will take a lot longer, but should find files that did not appear before. Follow the rest of the guide as normal from step 6 onwards.

Cyclic redundancy error

A cyclic redundancy check error on a hard disk means that part of a file read from the hard disk doesn't match the expected value.
A cyclic redundancy check error, in other words, means that files on your hard drive are corrupted.
Repair a cyclic redundancy check error on a hard disk using the Check Disk tool in Windows.

Click "Start" and click "Computer."
Right-click the hard disk with the cyclic redundancy check error under "Hard Disk Drives" and click "Properties."
Click the "Tools" tab at the top of the hard disk "Properties" window.
Click "Check Now" under "Error Checking."
Select "Automatically Fix File System Errors" and "Scan for and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors" in the "Check Disk" window by clicking each option if it isn't already selected.
Start a disk check and repair by clicking "Start" in the "Check Disk" window.
Click "Yes" if the "Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?" prompt appears.
A disk can't be checked if it's in use, so you'll need to restart Windows to check it.
Restart your computer by clicking "Start," clicking the arrow icon to the right of "Shut Down" and clicking "Restart."
(External drives will not schedule to happen on restart it will happen straight away.)

I bought a P500-OTE laptop on Dec 23 2010. Two days ago in start up it goes into a disk check, and every time after. Can you tell me what is wrong ?

They usually go into disk check mode when they have not been closed down correctly, or there is a disk error.
When the laptop has settled down and loaded, click start and type DSKCHK/F in the search box then run disk check with the /F for fix. That should fix all of your errors.
Hope that helps.

My WDC WD2500JS hard druive is getting noisy and slow. I am thinking of replaceing it before it dies and at the same time do a clean install of Win7. It is now XP. Can I make this drive a slave until I...

first up
uninstall a few unnecessary programs
you could run the check disk utility
click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to repair any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive then defragment your hard drive
second
yes you can make it a slave
you will have to change the setting in BIOS for master/slave aswell as the jumper settings

during the boot up process you will see on the screen for a short time press a certain key to enter set up press that key to enter set up

IDE-0 means Pri master ?
IDE-1 means Pri slave ?
IDE-2 means Sec master ?
IDE-3 means Sec slave ?

?

The BIOS is AMI. Under ADVANCED SETUP:
The options listed for 1st,2nd ,3rd Boot device include:

IDE-0 means Pri master ?
IDE-1 means Pri slave ?
IDE-2 means Sec master ?
IDE-3 means Sec slave ?

?

? single or master :::::

master with slave ::'::

???????????????? slave? :::':

note the plastic jumper is ' located at the rear of the hard drive next to the IDE/SATA lead/s
make sure the computers motherboard will support windows 7
wait until you get the new drive before before connecting your hard drives to master/slave
depending on the amount of drives your computer has you might have to change letters on all drives
naming of the hard drive you might be able to change the name opening windows explorer navigate to the drive then right click on the drive then select rename

When I turn my Toshiba external hard drive on, the led lights up and there is a very faint repetitive click but nothing else happens. Any ideas?

Hi

A clicking hard drive means that the mechanical parts of the drive are breaking down. This also means that the drive slows down and will eventually stop working. If you need to retrieve data from your clicking hard drive before it fails, you can do this with an external hard drive enclosure. This enclosure will turn your hard drive into a drive that is readable through a USB drive.

1)Place the hard drive inside the enclosure.
2)Push the enclosure's two rectangular cables into the back of the hard drive. These will power the drive and allow a computer to "see" the files.
3)Screw the enclosure tight with a Phillips head screwdriver. This will secure the hard drive within the enclosure, preventing it from moving around or falling out.
4)Connect the enclosure power cord into a socket. Place the enclosure's USB cord into the computer.
5)Click "Start," then press "My Computer." The drive will be located under the hard drive portion of "My Computer." Double-click it to open the drive. Drag the data you want to the computer for safe keeping.

In most cases the hard drives which clicks cannot be restore to normal functionality,so please ensure that you recover your data at the earliest before the hard drives fails completely.

Clicking

Is it a constant clicking?
If so it means your hard drive has departed this world for the next. I am sorry. I have heard this dreaded clicking many times myself. As for recovering the data there is a chance. In the 8 or 9 drives that have died I have recovered data from 5 of them. This is possible because more often then not the damage to the drive occurs on the circuit board rather then inside the drive. To fix this you will need to get an exact match to the board on your drive now.
You need to match both the model # and the DCM # of the drive.
The best places are computer stores that have a large supply of OEM drives. This can be expensive though. You can also check e-bay because I have seen hard drive boards only for as little as $15.
Once you have a board simply swap them out. You will know if it works right away.

Please remember this is not guaranteed to work.
There are also data recovery services, but they can be costly.
I hope this helps and good luck.
