Question about Gateway MX8711 Notebook
The "scroll zone" on my Synaptics Touch Pad is now, suddenly, totally unresponsive. Clicking on mouse icon in Control Panel produces either (1) a window entitled "Synpatics Pointing Device", which contains a triangle w an exclamation point against a yellow backround, and the statement "unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver, or (2) a window entitled "Mouse Properties" which contains 6 tabs ("buttons", "pointers", "pointer options", "wheel", "hardware", "device settings") but I find nothing therein that refers to the scroll zone; instead under "hardware" it states "Device status: this device is working properly". The Synaptics website provides no useful info on this. It refers me to the mfgr, but this laptop is out of warranty.
This is a Gateway NX860S which, I'm told, is the same as the MX8711
I have a MX8711.
I assume you are running Vista.
After you have updated your virus protector program and run a complete scan. You "could" be fixing it and if it is a virus problem, it is immediately reinfecting the driver. If it still doesn't work, I recommend you:
1. Rollback the driver of your touchpad. If it was working, this might do the trick. You can do this at Control Panel > Mouse > Hardware (tab) > Properties (button) > Driver (tab). If it has been updated and that caused the problem, you probably can "Roll Back" to the previous driver and that option will be highlighted.
2. If not, then your driver is probably corrupted. Go to Gateway Support and download the touchpad application file for your computer and SAVE IT TO YOU DESKTOP AND DO NOT RUN IT. Replacing only the driver usually doesn't work in these cases but try that first. Go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager > click on the (+) sign by mice and dbl click on the Symantics PS/2 Port Touchpad (or what ever yours is) > Driver (tab) > Uninstall. When you restart, it should reload the driver from the application that is still installed.
3. If that dosn't work, I recommend uninstall the application from Control Panel > Programs & Features. Restart your computer and install the application you saved on your desktop.

I had the same problem, but I fixed it.
Click start, type "msconfig," go to the "startup" tab, make sure that "synaptics pointing device driver" is checked. After you check the box, restart.
