Question about Gateway MX8711 Notebook

Inoperative touchpad scroll zone

The "scroll zone" on my Synaptics Touch Pad is now, suddenly, totally unresponsive. Clicking on mouse icon in Control Panel produces either (1) a window entitled "Synpatics Pointing Device", which contains a triangle w an exclamation point against a yellow backround, and the statement "unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver, or (2) a window entitled "Mouse Properties" which contains 6 tabs ("buttons", "pointers", "pointer options", "wheel", "hardware", "device settings") but I find nothing therein that refers to the scroll zone; instead under "hardware" it states "Device status: this device is working properly". The Synaptics website provides no useful info on this. It refers me to the mfgr, but this laptop is out of warranty.
This is a Gateway NX860S which, I'm told, is the same as the MX8711

Rwertheim,
I have a MX8711.
I assume you are running Vista.

After you have updated your virus protector program and run a complete scan. You "could" be fixing it and if it is a virus problem, it is immediately reinfecting the driver. If it still doesn't work, I recommend you:

1. Rollback the driver of your touchpad. If it was working, this might do the trick. You can do this at Control Panel > Mouse > Hardware (tab) > Properties (button) > Driver (tab). If it has been updated and that caused the problem, you probably can "Roll Back" to the previous driver and that option will be highlighted.

2. If not, then your driver is probably corrupted. Go to Gateway Support and download the touchpad application file for your computer and SAVE IT TO YOU DESKTOP AND DO NOT RUN IT. Replacing only the driver usually doesn't work in these cases but try that first. Go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager > click on the (+) sign by mice and dbl click on the Symantics PS/2 Port Touchpad (or what ever yours is) > Driver (tab) > Uninstall. When you restart, it should reload the driver from the application that is still installed.

3. If that dosn't work, I recommend uninstall the application from Control Panel > Programs & Features. Restart your computer and install the application you saved on your desktop.

I hope this helps.

Have a blessed day.

I had the same problem, but I fixed it.

Click start, type "msconfig," go to the "startup" tab, make sure that "synaptics pointing device driver" is checked. After you check the box, restart.

Touch pad does not operate. have uninstalled and reinstalled correct driver and PC device manager says device is working properly with no conflicting programs. generally, the pad did not really operate...

Hello,

it is possible that the touch pad is disabled. Check control panel to actually confirm.

Since your touch pad is not operating, you will need an external mouse to perform this task.

Here is what you have to do to check if the touch pad is disabled.

Turn on your laptop, wait till it boots completely.

Click start,

Scroll to Control Panel select Control Panel.

Under control panel, (you will find a Mouse icon), click Mouse and a dialogue box will pop out.

On the dialogue box, click "Device settings".

Under device settings, you will find "Synaptics Touchpad..."

Highlight the "Synaptics Touchpad..." by clicking on it once, then click enable.

By now the mouse pad should be enabled. Apply the changes for it to take affect.

If the above doesn't solve the problem, try performing system. System restore can help to back date your computer to the time when the touch pad was working....

Go to Start > All programs > Accessories > System tools > System restore. Read and follow instructions.....

If the two solutions does not work, please let me so that I can further help you.

Yours sincerely.

If your computer have a, Synaptics Touchpad you can try these steps:

1. Access the properties of the Synaptics Pointing Device by right-clicking on the system tray icon at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. If you do not see the icon, open your Control Panel and select the "Performance and Maintenance" option. Click "System", then "Hardware", then "Device Manager" to view the devices on your computer. Open the "Mice and Other Pointing Devices" selection.

2. Click on the "Device Settings" tab of the "Mouse Properties" window. The "Device Settings" tab is at the top of the window and located farthest to the right

3. Highlight the Synaptics Touchpad from the list of available pointing devices. Click the "Disable" button underneath the list. Click "OK" on the pop-up menu to confirm your selection. Click "OK" on the Mouse Properties window to close the window. Your Synaptics Touchpad will now be disabled.

Make sure to connect a USB mouse to your laptop before disabling the touchpad so that you will still have control of your pointer.

Hope this help. Goodluck!

Scroll bar in my touch pad is not working

Go to control panel then mouse properties and see if it needs to be reconfigured. Sometimes they just change on their own if you are using a mouse as well as the touch pad, remove the mouse (device), then reinstall the Synaptics touch pad software and try setting it up. You may have to turn on that function in touchpad control settings. You can reinstall the touchpad driver, be sure though that it's for your laptop's model.

I have a problem with my laptop, my scroll thing won't work in the touch pad, i need help?

The touchpad in those units is made by a company called Synaptics. Go to this page and download the drivers for your operating system. http://www.synaptics.com/support/drivers
You will also need to go to Start, Control Panel, Mouse, and set the zones on your touchpad. My guess is after the driver install, you will find the scroll zone is set too small and need sto be adjusted.

I am using my phone to ask this question.

Hello,

the touch pad is usually controlled by synaptic.

To turn it on back, press start menu from your key board and scroll to control panel.

From control panel, use the tab button to select the icons on control panel and go to mouse.

From mouse, use your keyboard to control to device settings.

From device settings, you would see synaptics touch pad, then press enable and that's all.

You touch pad would then be enabled again.

All the best.

Not working for my vertical scroll zone howcan activate this problem

Hi,

Assuming you're talking about the touchpad, this can be enabled and disabled in your control panel.

Open your start menu, then Control panel, if it's not in classic mode click the Classic View link in the top-left corner. Now open the mouse icon and select the Device settings tab(red logo), now click the settings select by single clicking the synaptics touch pad from the list. click the settings button below the list and select the "Virtual Scrolling" section.

You will see two check boxes, the First enables the marked off vertical scrolling feature, the second enables a horizontal scrolling feature that may not be marked on the mousepad but runs along the bottom of the pad and works the same way.

Click OK, on both windows and close the comtrol panel.

Hope this helps FixYa, if not reply back with any additional info you can,

Chris

Touch pad

First check if your Synaptics Touchpad is well configured in System Panel ---> Hardware, under "another pointing devices".
If so, then go to Control Panel ---> Mouse ---> Synaptics Touchpad. There you can enable/disable properties.
To get the pad properly setup, you should try to download and install te SP21661 pack from HP/Compaq, that pack comes with all the features you can use, very useful for W2K & WinXP.
