Laptop computer connection to tv

I've been using my new large screen plasma tv to view photos,movies etc. from my laptop (hp pavilion dv2000)for quite a while now. But the other day I connected the laptop to watch a movie and the picture on the tv was in black and white. I cannot figure out how to get the color back on the tv. the tv works fine when not connected to my laptop. The cable is connected and is fairly new.. no damage I can see.

Its not a problem with your hardware its settings problem either in your tv or laptop in the NTSC/ PAL settigns. correct those it should work properly. check the tv first..as its possible for settigns to be different, and this problem is not common for all vcd and dvd and blu-ray disks its the way they are burned in which format...

all cool...

have a nice day...!!

The only output you have on this laptop is a VGA monitor connection.

See manual.

You need a TV with a PC connection to view the video.

You will also have to connect up the speaker sockets t the TV audio in via a cable, that depends on the TV.

Scroll down, click on -
HP Pavilion dv2500 and dv2700 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on the file name it may take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up.
(Took 10 seconds just now using a medium speed DSL connection )

Primer:
An LCD screen cannot produce light by itself. It needs an addtional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight can be a CCFL, or a series of LED lights.
The HP Pavilion dv2910us Notebook PC uses a CCFL.

A CCFL is a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

(Usually 2mm Wide, by, close to the height of the LCD screen)

A screen Inverter converts the power (Electricity) from the laptop, for the Backlight, and LCD screen.

90 PERCENT OF THE TIME the fault can be attributed to a bad screen Inverter.

The screen Inverter is located behind the Display Bezel, and mounted to the bottom area of the LCD screen.

{The Display Bezel is the thin piece of plastic in Front of the LCD screen, and surrounds the LCD screen, in front }

Example of a Pavilion dv2910us screen Inverter,

http://www.batterycentury.com/hp-pavilion-dv2910us-inverter-p-177051.html

Wires in a cable with a connector on the end, plug into the screen Inverter, and come out of the screen Inverter.
The connectors are different so there is no mixing them up.

A) Remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger) and Battery.

B) Follow Anti-Static Precautions.
Work on a table. Not on a bed, couch, or directly on a carpet floor.
If the table is on a carpeted floor, refrain from swinging your feet across it.

If you do not have an ESD wrist strap available, (Average cost $3 to $5),
at least place a large metallic object on the table (Unpainted), and touch it before, and occasionally during working on the laptop.

Perhaps a large metal serving tray (Unpainted), or large metal knickknack. (Unpainted)

C) Now in the service manual, go to the Bookmarks menu on the left side, click on the + sign to the left of -
Removal and replacement procedures

Click on the + sign next to - Component replacement procedures
Scroll the bar down, click right ON - Display assembly

{You can reduce, or increase the view size.
The ( + ) Zoom In icon increases the view size.
The ( - ) Zoom Out icon decreases the view size }

In the instructions anything that is in blue, can be clicked on to take you to more in-depth info, on that subject.

You are looking to see for one, if the Video Cable connections have come loose.
It doesn't take much, and just viewing with the human eye may not discern if it is loose.

The procedure is to physically check, to make sure the connections are tight.
The Video Cable plugs into the motherboard, then routes under the left Hinge, and up into the Display Assembly.
There it connects to the Back of the LCD screen.

{HP:
Video Cable = Display Panel Cable.
LCD screen = Display Panel }

You have to remove;
1) All power,
2) Switch Cover (Page 79 in the page number box, at the top of the PDF file)
3) Keyboard (Page 75)

,and then you have access to the Video Cable connector, on the motherboard side.

You have to remove:
1) All power
2) Switch Cover
3) Keyboard
4) Display Assembly,

and remove the Display Panel far enough from the Display Enclosure, to physically make sure the Display Panel Cable is plugged in tightly.

Opening, and closing the laptop may have pinched the Display Panel Cable (Video Cable), and pulled one, or both connections loose.

Since the Display Panel Cable is also routed under the left Hinge, it can be pinched enough to damage it.
See if there are obvious signs of damage to the sheath of the cable.

Have someone with a multimeter set to Ohms, check the continuity of the wires, in the Display Panel Cable.

{Average cost for an inexpensive multimeter to perform this test, is around $8 to $12.
Available in a multitude of stores. An auto parts store is but one example. Analog or digital is fine. I prefer Analog }

Have an assistant gently wiggle the cable while checking for continuity, to see if there is an intermittent break.
Indicates a broken wire in the Display Panel Cable.

[ The test for a screen Inverter uses a sensitive multimeter. Not something everyone has laying around. Most consumers who do not have this tool, replace the screen Inverter,

Im on a laptop and the back light usually just flickers but the screen has gone dark and i have to use a flashlight to see the screen.

Replace the Inverter, rickeyjsmith.

An LCD screen cannot produce enough light by itself. An additional light source is needed.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight is a CCFL.
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. (Lamp = Bulb)
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale in physical size.
(Average size is 3 to 5 inches long, and half the diameter of a No.2 pencil)

An Inverter is used to provide power to the LCD screen, and the Backlight.

90 PERCENT of the time the Inverter is the problem.

Which is a Good thing.
The Backlight is located inside the metal frame that hold the LCD panel layers together.
Usually on one side of the LCD screen.
{Some LCD screens require Two Backlights}

Replacing a Backlight is a job for a trained repair person.
The LCD screen is a composite of layers.

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Vikuiti1/BrandProducts/secondary/optics101/

A lot of times the LCD screen is replaced for Backlight replacement, because some LCD screens require this.

Backlights cost more than an Inverter, and of course an LCD screen costs much more.

This is an example of an Inverter for an HP pavilion dv2000 series Notebook PC,

http://www.buy.com/prod/new-usa-lcd-inverter-hp-pavilion-dv2000-dv2100-dv2200/q/sellerid/23962916/loc/101/217117085.html

The above is ONLY an example.
An Inverter MUST be matched to THE LCD screen.

Stating Pavilion dv2000 is only stating the series.
The EXACT Product Number is located on the bottom of the laptop in a white Service Tag.
P/N = Product Number

Also, there is an HP part number on the Inverter.
Match the HP part number to the listing for the Inverter you are going to purchase.

A reputable seller will list THE HP part number so that the buyer will purchase THE correct Inverter.

How to replace an Inverter in an HP Pavilion dv2000 series Notebook PC;

1) Service Manual

I'm going to use the HP pavilion dv2000 CTO Notebook PC as an example.
The Service Manual is the same for All of the Pavilion dv2000 series of Notebook PC's,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=1817074&

On this page click on the file name >
HP Pavilion dv2000 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide.

After you click on the above link it may take up to 30 seconds, or more, to see the first page.
In the meantime you will be viewing a blank white page.
The PDF file is downloading in the background.

In the Bookmarks menu to the left, click on the + sign to the left of >
Maintenance and Service Guide.

Click on the + sign next to > Removal and Replacement Preliminaries
Read up on Anti-Static Precautions

Now go back, and click on the + sign next to >
Removal and Replacement Procedures.

Scroll the sidebar down, and click on > 5.12 Display Assembly

Direct information on replacing the Inverter is on Page 152.
(Page Number Box at the top of the PDF file, to the right of the blue Down Arrow)

I use a computer pick to ease up on one side of the rubber Screw Covers. You may have a similar device you can use.
If you are careful with the rubber Screw Covers, you can reuse them.
There is a contact cement on the covers.

Lay them down glue side up on a piece of paper.
(They do like to stick to the computer pick, and your fingers, however. Giving you a 'heads-up'.
Try to keep the glue side from picking up debris, however)

If you need guidance, no matter what it is concerning this procedure, please post in a Comment.

One more thing that pertains to the HP pavilion dv2000, dv6000, and dv9000 series of Notebook PC's, that I think you should be made aware of,

Connect HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop to Panasonic Viera 42'' plasma

If you get your wallpaper to show on your TV, then you should be almost there.

  • Try to right-click somewhere in the desktop, choose "Properties" and go to the Settings tab. (Now you should be able to see both monitors.)
  • Click on the "Identify" tab to see which one is your TV.
  • See if "Extend my Windows Desktop onto this monitor" is checked.
  • Try to find a resolution that works with your TV by changing the values for the screen resolution.
