I'm trying to solve the same issue. I noticed that the in TV menu's "Setup" option lists "PC" but does not allow it to be selected (it is greyed out) - suspect that this model of the TV does not actually support use with a PC.

Will keep looking for ideas and update this thread.

Ok, having downloaded the user manual from here:http://safemanuals.com I can see that the LW20M21CP requires a resolution of 640x 480 with a refresh rate of 50-70 Hz. The driver in my PC can't deliver that so it looks as though we'll need a new monitor :-(

Hooked up my HP pavilion dv7-1240us (Vista) to our HDMI cable, then into the TV, as usual. Slept he computer, then disconnected the HDMI cable. Since then, I cannot get any screen at all. Have tried...

restart pc in safe mode, change video back to standard VGA of HD VGA video. PC has to be in HDMI mode and your TV has to be PC mode. Use a DIV to HDMI connector or better yet HDMI to VideoPort if your TV supports it, HDMI almost never gives you the screen output you really want anyway.

We are trying to set up a dual monitor system so that we cn watch movies via the pc [not laptop] we have plugged in all the cables but still zilch

if you want to set up a dual tv monitor system using via pc as a source you will need a VGA splitter usually 2 or more output. now how are you going to connect the 2 monitor and PC to the VGA splitter. first make sure your tv monitor is supported by service input for PC unit. then prepare the accessories needed. the VGA splitter and VGA cable. vinceisaac_30.jpg vinceisaac_31.jpg sample image for VGA splitter VGA cable or connector how are you going to hook up the splitter and VGA cable to the tv monitor and PC
  • you need 3 vga connector and 1 splitter to connect a dual monitor system.
  • connect one end of the vga connector to the pc unit and the other end to the input port of splitter.
  • now the 2 remaining vga connector connect to the output of splitter either of the port, then the 2 end wire you must connect to the input port ( pc service port ) of the 2 tv monitor. make sure you set up the right input either with the remote or at the tv unit to recognized the pc source.
  • you almost done the connections now at this point plug the tv monitors, plug the dc adapter supply of the vga splitter and lastly turn on the pc unit to view movies. i hope it will help you just ask me if you have further questions thanks for choosing the fixya.

Can you explain how can i view my advent 5421 laptop on my flatscreen tv - thanks - patrick

Hi Patrick,
If your tv has a VGA connector:

greed03.jpg and your desktop should have one too, you can use a VGA cable with males ends to connect to your TV.
Once it's connected, you might have to change the video mode on the TV to see your computer screen.

Hope this helps!

Hi, I am trying to connect my laptop to my TV using VGA (MALE) to VGA (MALE) cable. I am able to see black lines on the TV with noise. How can i correct this ?

You didn't say, is the TV HDTV??
From Windows help menu, press F1, type in "VGA connection" I found this:

Why can't I hear audio when I connect my computer to an HDTV?

VGA, DVI, and component video cables do not support audio signals. HDMI cables do support audio signals, but not all HDMI-enabled video cards support audio. If your HDTV has an audio input, you might be able to connect a separate audio cable from your computer's sound card directly to the TV. Otherwise, you'll need to connect the audio signal to a different output device, such as external computer speakers or your home stereo system. For more information about sound cards, see Sound cards: frequently asked questions.

From Wikipedia.org search VGA connection:
1.
Video Graphics Array (VGA) refers specifically to the display hardware first introduced with the IBM PS/2 line of computers in 1987,[1] but through its widespread adoption has also come to mean either an analog computer display standard, the 15-pin D-subminiature VGA connector or the 640×480 resolution itself. While this resolution was superseded in the personal computer market in the 1990s, it is becoming a popular resolution on mobile devices.[2]
VGA was the last graphical standard introduced by IBM that the majority of PC clone manufacturers conformed to, making it today (as of 2010[update]) the lowest common denominator that all PC graphics hardware can be expected to implement without device-specific driver software.[citation needed] For example, the Microsoft Windows splash screen appears while the machine is still operating in VGA mode, which is the reason that this screen always appears in reduced resolution and color depth.
VGA was officially superseded by IBM's Extended Graphics Array (XGA) standard, but in reality it was superseded by numerous slightly different extensions to VGA made by clone manufacturers that came to be known collectively as Super VGA.

2.
The same VGA cable can be used with a variety of supported VGA resolutions, ranging from 640x400px @70 Hz (24 MHz of signal bandwidth) to 1280x1024px @85 Hz (160 MHz) and up to 2048x1536px @85 Hz (388 MHz). There are no standards defining the quality required for each resolution, but higher-quality cables typically contain coaxial wiring and insulation which make them thicker. A quality cable should not suffer from signal crosstalk which occurs when the signals in one wire induce unwanted currents in adjacent wires, ghosting which occurs when impedance mismatches cause signals to be reflected (note that ghosting with long cables may not be the fault of the cable but may instead be caused by equipment with incorrect termination or by use of passive splitters), and other signal degradation effects; shorter VGA cables are less likely to introduce significant degradation. Some higher-end monitors and video cards featured 5 separate BNC connectors for RGBHV signal, allowing highest quality connection using five 75 Ohm coaxial cables.

I hope this helps, I find the sales reps at Best Buy very helpful.

I can watch a movie from my computer to tv but the sound only came from the computer not on the tv

if you want the sound from tv, get an audio cable and put one end to computer where the speakers connected and the other to the audio input or aux in back of tv.

good luck hope it works, if so do rate the solution
