Question about Villeroy & Boch 5C06 01 P8 Twist One Piece Elongated High Performance Sipho

Our V&B Toilet is leaking water from the base of the unit (i.e. where it is concreted to the floor). The plumber who came to look at it seems to think that he has to break the toilet to get into it to have a look - is this correct? Surely you can look into the base of the unit without breaking it?

Yes it is a wax seal under the toilet, There is just 2 screws holding it down to the floor. Anybody could take it up and fix it.

The bolts are on the two sides down on the base. Prob has small square covers over them

How do you know if a toilet should be replaced?

Your toilet should be just fine,I have 2 toilets that run to a septic tank, the newer one gets clogged up cause of the new regulations that only 1.2 gallons is used per flush which means it needs to be flushed more often than the old type I have, the new one, they are problematic. On your case, are you using a lot of paper,if so,then flush more often.Your plunger may have a pin hole in it,not letting you unclogged,Flush toilet, then plunge quickly. You may need a new plugger, they have better types now,Walmart has them.

Caroma toilet 12years old, concealed cistern. Water leaking around base when toilet is flushed. water level maintained when not flushing, so the leak must be between the cistern and the bowl. Had a plumber...

Fixing a leaky toilet is actually rather simple, requiring few tools and just a little time and effort. In looking at Caroma toilets on Google, they appear to be just a standard type of unit, and should present few if any problems for yourself or any handyman of modest skill.

If it is leaking around the base of the toilet - where the toilet sits on the floor, the repair item is a simple wax seal. Here is a tutorial to effect this repair: Replace Toilet Wax Ring. The wax ring is very inexpensive, usually $5 to $10 USD.

If the water is leaking from between the tank (cistern) and the toilet bowl, the job is even easier, as it does not require lifting and moving the entire toilet. A good tutorial for that repair is here: How to Replace Tank to Bowl Gasket . The gaskets, new nuts, bolts and rubber seals come in a kit and also cost only $5 to $10 USD.

I am sorry to hear your Plumber insisted you buy an entire new toilet, but do remember he is in the business of making money!

Do you recommend 'sealing' the bottom of a toilet with silicone?

no, it will yellow if p gets on it. Use a flexible acrylic caulk, but not an acrylic adhesive because it will make it hard to lift the toilet in the future without damaging the floor.

Leaking sewer pipe

Depending on how many pipes you have connected in the run from the toilet to the concrete pipe, I would replace all of it with plastic pipe and a new soil pipe if I could find one, if not put the plastic in the soil pipe and pour a concrete patch to fix the hole. Without seeing what you have there, it is hard to say for sure. But cast iron is not used much these days and a job to fix, cut, seal, repair, most are replaced. Hope this helps.

Leaks when cleaning the bowl. Bowl moves a bit. Plumber was afraid to tighten bolts too much for fear of breaking bowl. How tight?

Leaks at the floor or the tank where it meets the base behind the seat?

Generally tight enough to sinch it so as not to leak.

If the whole unit moves on the floor the wax ring may need to be replaced. If the tank leaks be sure the bolts are tightened evenly with new gaskets sealing them inside the tank. Tighten the nuts evenly until it stops moving freely and the leak should stop.

Looking to buy/install Toto Aquia II in my circa 1964 co-op apt.

When you say 10.5 inches from wall, do you mean that from the center of the drain in the floor to the back wall is 10.5 inches? If so, you need a toilet for a "10 inch rough-in" dimension. The Aquia doesn't come in that dimension. Sorry!

Caroma Sydney Smart model 270 comes in a 10 inch rough-in and is a dual flush model. Note that all dual flush toilets are fairly expensive as compared to normal toilets. HOWEVER, genrally speaking, ALL 10 inch rough-in toilets are fairly expensive just because the low volume that are sold.
