I did exactly as suggested: start; run; cmd etc. The hardrive is listed, so it is recognized. However, it still does not appear when I look for it in "my computer". Any other suggestion?

Is the hard drive spinning? Do you have it powered?

Which OS are you in? If winxp or vista, try the following:

start | run
cmd

diskpart
list disk

If your disk is listed, then it is at least recogized by the computer. If not, then it's not connected properly or has a problem.

Western Digital WD Passport 250GB Portable Drive 250 GB Hard Drive is causing my computer in windows to nott show the drive for t and saying i/o device error to appear. what would cause that and what

The hardware that you are trying to access is damaged or failing.
The device drivers for the hardware are faulty or incompatible. There is a connection problem such as a bad cable

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll through all of your devices

if you see a yellow question or exclamation mark ? ! or a red X you will need to update the drivers for this device right click select update driver/reinstall driver

if you can see your usb device but its not working scroll to Ports(Com&Ltd) right click to update driver

if you computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle to shutdown or fail to detect a hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions IDE,SATA

the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO THE HARD DRIVE make sure they have a

secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty if its a flat 40pin ide

this will be the first to fail

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions

or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs power and data to travel through every working device and continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

hope this helps

THE MANUL THAT CAME WITH THE UNIT IS TOOOO SMAL TO READ even with classes.

Dont even bother to read the manual. These drives are plug and play; just hook it to your machine and start using it. Once connected, your machine will tell you tha *** has found another storage device.

Simple Tech 250 GB external hard drive won't work

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.

If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

I have a Acom data hard drive Model HD500uhe5-72

Here's what you need to do:

1. Try connecting the HD (hard drive) into different USB ports of the computer.

2. Try another computer to see if the HD would be detected.

3. Try another USB cable.

Do you hear a clicking sound on the HD itself while it's turned on? Check the Disk Management of your Vista computer to see if the HD would be detected under the Disk Management. Please follow the steps below:

1. On your Desktop screen, right-click the "Computer" icon > select "Manage".

2. Double-click on "Disk Management"

3. Connect the HD while looking at the Disk Management. If the drive letter appear then, it's your Acomdata HD.

4. Check the status if it's healthy or unallocated disk space. If it appeared to be unallocated, you need to reformat the HD to make it work again.

To reformat it, just right-click on the drive letter that would appear and there's an option to reformat.

NOTE: Formatting a HD would erase all the data saved in it.

Have a great day!

Firelite 160gb HD not recognized

Make sure that there is no "HD protection", in which the hard drive can only be connected to one computer. Also, try going to google and searching for some drivers for your computer to download and install. Then try plugging your hard drive in again.
