Question about Televison & Video

Back in March, you answered this post: By sklovingood on Mar 15, 2010: our 27'' lxi tv (model 42428) picture has reduced down to about half the vertical screen and will bounce back and forth between half and almost full based on the activity on the screen. when it shrinks down it shows only the top half of the picture screen with the bottom half cut off. Solution #1 posted on Mar 15, 2010 by Abrsvcs: This is a problem with the vertical circuit and can be as simple as poor solder connections within that circuit or defective parts. If you have no experience with soldering or TVs , this should go to a service shop. Expect a parts cost in the $30-$40 range for and IC +/or capacitors. If you'd like to attempt this yourself, please supply the exact make and model so I can post the parts required along with additional instructions. Please note that TVs contain potentially dangerous high voltages even when unplugged. Thanks, Dan ~ I was having the same problem with my 1994, 27" Sears LXI series, Model # 42408 (274.42408 391). I was gonna take some readings in my vertical circuit, until a friend retuned my meter fried. I would greatly appreciate any additional assistance you cuold give me as I don't have the schematic. 1st,I was just gonna look and hit some of the solder joints, because I know some of those get weak/loose from the years of heat and hoped that I lucked up and fixed it.: ) Don't worry, I did go to school for tv repair some years back. Thank you, treerey

Hi.

If the problem is alignment. Most of the time the problem is caused by a defective convergence IC.

Before going for the ICs have a look at the deflection youke (I think this model is a CRT, I cannot find service manual for it)

The repair is done replacing the convergence ICs. This cost about $10/$20 each.

I think that the IC on this TV are STK 392-110, the number is clearly readable on top of the IC. Often the ICs can be replaced with ICs that support a biggger voltage (eg. STK 392-110 with STK 392-150).

You can order the ICS online, for example contacting any of the sellers below. The repair must be done by an experienced person.

Encompass Parts Distribution

Appliance parts, electronics parts & more from PartStore.

Alternatively read the number on the IC (eg.STK 392-110) and put it in google shopping to find a seller in your area.
The convergence ICs are two power amp STK chips, located on the convergence board. This must be desoldered and replaced with the new STK ICs, that must be soldered using coolant paste.
More components may need replacement and must be tested. Resistors in the convergence board must be tested to ensure that they have continuity (read Ohms and ensure that circuit is not open). Some TV have also resistors placed near to the connector with the main digital board. This have function of pico fuse and must be tested and eventually replaced.
Also inspect capacitors on convergence board. If any of them is bulged, replace it.

Here the ICs mounted on convergence board:

Here a description of the procedure needed to replace the ICs done on a different model.

My 15 month Celcus LCD423D913FHD tv will not turn on. The standby light is lit and will flicker but will not power up the tv. What is the likely problem?

Fault with its main board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ . In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.

Tv picture blurry, not clear

The LXI or Sears brand used philips TV's. These sets are known for bad coolant fluid. In between the picture tube and their lenses is a layer of clear coolant. Over time the coolant breaks down and causes the picture to become blurry. This can be a complicated repair involving removal of the picture tubes and lenses. Have a repair shop check it for you. Thanks for using fixya.

while i dont have a true answer, I can tell you its a magnavox tv sold by sears produced back in 93. Ours just started doing this last week. I couldnt find any help online so we replaced it with a new led flat panel. WOW what a difference, the LXI was great for the past 17 years but the new tvs are better. We put the LXI in the garage because we couldnt throw it away. That tv was like a family member, if i figure out how to fix it i will post the how to.

Can't view all my channels on LXI series TV

For anyone with a set with this problem that is older----IT DOES NOT HAVE THAT PART OF THE CABLE BAND BUILT INTO IT--only solution is either to put a cable box to it or buy a new set.
