Hello try to download a manual here:

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3817#manual

Try only to use the white or the blue sockets, when inseting the modules. This depends how the mainboard is build, parallel or serial ram bank.
But one of the modules could have a defect .

4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory.

Good luck

How to check for short or replace

Very difficult to trace the short. I suggest you install a new motherboard.
All motherboard manufacturers have standard mounting holes, select a well known brand such as Gigabyte, MSI, etc.

Mother board restart again and again

Many timeCOMPUTER CERTIFIED EXPERT HERE, THIS SOLUTION IS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY TO FIX YOUR PROBLEM
Many times an operating system will refuse to shut down because of computer Registry error problems. For example, if you download and install tune up 2010, it may fix your registry automatically for you however if it fails to, your operating system will continue to fail to shutdown. Device drivers are very well known for causing this error and if you have installed a new device and your computer is not picking up the new device properly, then the computer will not shut down. There are several forms of viruses that cause the system to stay on, power problems may cause the system to crash during a storm and thus damage the computer registry. A system defragmentation, cleanup, along with a registry clean would be the first best ideas.

System crashes completely. just freezes and never recovers. for some odd reason, when i try to run the windows repair, it crashes as well giving me the blue screen of death. i have three other hard drives:...

You are probably correct in thinking it a motherboard problem, its sounds like the disk controller on the motherboard id faulty.
There are a huge range of motherboards to choose from.
The mounting holes on the motherboard will match the desktop mounting plate, these are standard configurations.
Stick with the well known brands and with the functions that suit your requirements.
My choice of brands are Gigabyte, Intel, MSI.
If you are into gaming and video editing etc. go for a motherboard without a built-in graphics card and purchase a separate high end graphics card.

Im not sure how much ram to use with my motherboard.

Your board can support 4Gb of RAM.

CLICK HERE for the SPEC sheet.

HERE is the memory support list, there is only 1 type of KINGSTON 2GB stick that is listed as compatible.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS as there are some known issues with this board and certain 4GB RAM configs as well as fixes for 1TB HDD space errors.

Always a good idea to make sure you have the latest XP service pack. In general, XP only recognises 3Gb RAM but mine runs fine with 4 in it.

When you crash, is there any Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) or any other output to your monitor or does it just shut down with no warning or error code or anything? If this is happening then you may be getting a CPU OVERTEMP condition.

Have you recently upgraded other components as well as your RAM?
