There are two screw you have to unscrew on the back panel and the you pull the panel up and foward then you will see the plug for the door switch and two gold clips on both side of the washer undo the clips and the pull the whole casing of the washer off and the door switch is under the casing or you can strip the wires back that are show and put a wire nut on it and i will work just fine but you will be able to open the lid while in a spin cycle so if you have little kids i would not do this but if not save the money and just tie the wire together.

My whirlpool washer won't drain and spin. It is 10 years old. Fix or repair? Please say fix!!!

In top load washers, if the machine goes through the cycles and then just stops at the spin cycle and leaves you with no noise and a tub full of water more than likely the lid switch is bad and not completing the circuit for cycle to continue. This is a safety precaution to prevent injury by reaching in the machine while at high speed spin. You can usually look and visually see the spot where the switch should be and if damaged. How to repair :
1) Unplug the machine. 2) At the head, or control panel, find the two screws that hold it to the case. Some are on the left and right front lower corners of the panel, and some are vertical facing s on the rear left and right side. Also on some models they are in the front but you have to pull the end caps off the sides of the control panel. 3) Remove the 2 screws and then pull the panel from the lower part of it towards you and roll it backwards. 4) Disconnect the lid switch connection in the the middle where the two grey wires and the green wire block connects to the body of the machine, usually near the middle under the panel. 5) with a flathead screwdriver pop out the two brass retainer clips on the right and left side. 6) Open the lid slightly where you can grab the case, not the tub, just the case, and pull forward and surprise!!! You just took the complete top, sides and front of the machine off. The lid switch will be attached to this portion so located it, remove the two screws that hold it in place, under the lid, and swap out with a new one. This is a cheap repair, just take your time and you'll be fine,

Washer fills agitates but wont drain

The usual problem when that type washer does not drain/spin is a broken lid switch. The lid switch is mid center side of the rim of the lid opening when looking at the washer from the front.ina lot of case by looking in that area ya can see where its broken and hanging down,if ya can not see it phyisically broken ya can open the lid and close it slowly and listen for a click when the lid is mostly closed,do this a couple times,if ya do no thear a click when lid is almost closed the switch will be the problem

This youtube video will show ya how to replace the lid switch.

This washer definitely does what it wants to - od will appear when I try to start it - all I get is a loud beep and the washer will not start - but sometimes when I try to start it, the washer begins as it...

Hello inezfragala,

If you are only throwing the OD error code to the Console and you can’t clear it I feel you have a broken lead on the magnetic reed relay switch or severe pin/plug corrosion in the left hand lid lock. See the pic’s be low. Next Question do you want to DIY or call in a service repair company.

The FAV6800AW/FAV9800AW Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

If you want to DIY the fix I would start by removing the Left Hand Lid Lock. Follow the Service Manual page 34 Lid Lock/Reed Switch Removal.

The technicians thumb is on the Left Hand Lid Lock assembly. The Left Hand Lid Lock assembly is not a sealed very well and is subject to corrosion issues with its location near the bleach dispenser. If you are a DIY’er you won’t have any problem getting to the Left Hand Lid Lock assembly.

Unplug the 120VAC to your machine and follow the manual to raise the washer top from the base. The mating plug can be very difficult to remove from the assembly. Remove the 5/16 sheet metal screw holding the lid lock to the washer top. Once loose you can press the tabs and pull the mating plug from the socket pins in the Lid Lock. Be careful when you open the case halves of the Left Hand Lid lock assembly it’s very easy to damage those retaining tabs. Work very slowly with a small flat blade jewelers screwdriver or similar. If you have heavy corrosion issues you can clean up with WD-40 and some finger nail emery file board on the pins in the Left Hand Lid Lock.

If you need to replace the left lid lock here is the part number 25001048 or here another link.

Check to see if the Black and Red wires are on the magnetic reed relay switch solder connections have not broken loose from corrosion. They can be re-soldered back on if they have broken loose. If you have heavy corrosion in the Left Hand Lid Lock assembly and can’t clean up to clear the error code I would replace the Left Lid Lock. There is a possibility that the signaling is lost from the Left lid Lock plug back threw the machines wiring harness. This would require advanced troubleshooting using a DVM to trace +12VDC from the Control Board Back to the Control Board thru the L.H. Lid Lock. Don’t go near the Control Board with a DVM set to measure resistance/continuity you could destroy your Control Board.

Big time corrision issues with L.H. Lid Lock.

Re-solder lead to fix OD error code.

Broken wire on magnetic reed relay will cause OD alarm and you won't be able to clear.

This how the L.H. Lid Lock should look.

DIY pin out info.

Post back if you have question and I will try to help....Rich

Mine wont spin

Your problem is more likely a broken lid switch. To test for this, lift the washer cover and look for a small hole in the washer top where the cover was. Push a toothpick gently into the hole and press the piece of plastic you see in the hole downward and listen for a soft clicking sound. If you don't hear a click or the plastic tab is not in the hole replace the lid switch.

Unplug the washer. Check the actuator on the lid that operates the lid switch to see if broken. Open the console of the washer. After removing the screws, the console will lift up and hinge back. Disconnect the plug going to the lid switch. Picture. Check the lid switch [lid closed] with an ohm meter from the wire plug-in leading to the switch. If no continuity, replace the lid switch. You will need to remove the cabinet to replace the switch. There are only a couple screws holding the lid switch assembly and a ground wire connection to the cabinet. Reassemble the washer and test the operation.

Unplug washer, remove the two console screws and tilt console back, remove cabinet clips, unlock lid switch block and then remove the cabinet. Remove the lid switch mounting screws, disconnect ground wire and remove lid switch assembly. Compare old switch to the new one. If the plastic sleeve of the new switch is longer, break off at the score mark. Pull wire partially out of sleeve before shortening sleeve. If the sleeve had to be shortened, the wires must be looped to take up the excess wire. Use supplied wire tie from the new kit. Install new switch assembly. New lid switch

Pay VERY close attention to assembling case back onto base so that sides engage tabs in base.

Reads "OP" when lid is closed

Magnetic reed switch on left side below the gray rubber bumper, shown here...

Release two spring clips in front between main top and front panel using putty knife. Lift the main top and access the left and right door locks here.

To access and see if the magnet is in place, remove the dispenser from lid.
Gently pry the bottom of the plastic inner lid toward you then down. This will let you see if the magnet is in place on the right front corner of the inner lid.

Seems to be a common problem with this washer. Apparently, the lid isn’t completely watertight and allows water to get into this switch corroding the contacts and the wires.

Thanks for using FixYa - a Very Helpful rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question.

Have the OP signal, have cleaned all latches and lid areas but still not working. how do i pop off the top portion to check the side locking latches? i can see they are not well sealed and would rather fix...

This is a common problem on this washer. (The OP fault code). It is caused by a faulty magnetic reed switch. Apparently, the lid on these washers isn't completely watertight and allows water/moisture to get into the switch and corrode the wires and connections.

The switch is on the left side under the rubber bumper, Release two spring clips in the front between main top and front panel using a putty knife. Lift the top. To access and see if the magnet is in place, remove the dispenser from lid. Gently pry the bottom of the plastic inner lid toward you and down. This will let you see if the magnet is in place on the right front corner of the inner lid. Here is a picture of a bad door lock switch:

Sure hope this helped and best wishes.

Lid switch is out

I would recommend you replace the lid switch rather than by-passing it. The following link explains how:

The lid switch is a safety feature that is to protect the consumer from the high speed rotation of the wash tub and the agitator. If you by-pass it, you will need to push in the timer PRIOR to opening the lid in order for the tub to stop. I would recommend by-passing as a last resort (temporary repair) while awaiting a new switch.

To by-pass a lid switch, follow the steps in the link provided to open the console. Make sure the washer is UNPLUGGED. Locate the white lid switch connector and unplug it. Remove the washer exterior case and remove the lid switch from under the washer casing. With the lid switch in your hand, cut the connector plug off, leaving about 2 inches of wire. Remove the green (center wire) from the plug and crimp the two black wires together. You have just made yourself a by-pass plug. Plug this back into the connector on the timer and the washer will now operate without the lid switch.

As I stated before, you will need to push in the timer prior to opening the lid to stop the tub. You can save the plug for future use, but use only as a temporary fix.

Replacement switches are available at,,, and They don't cost much and I provided you with easy instructions to follow.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Washer won't drain or spin.

Kenmore top loader blues direct%20drive%20cabinet%20removal.jpg Use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding down the control panel, then swing it upwards. Pop the s clips in the rear and remove the lid switch disconnect. Tip the case forward and remove it.You will now be able to repair the washer! The lid must be closed for spin. The lid has a striker in it that pushes against the lidswitch arm. This switch allows for spin IF the lid is closed. The switch may have failed. Mechanically the striker may be broken or the actuator arm may be broken. ls2.jpg here is a broken lid switch You can test the switch. If you have a meter. If not you can simply bypass this switch. In my left hand here is the lid switch male plug which I have removed from the lid switch harness. If I wanted to i could simply place a jumper between the 2 outside wires and the washer would spin. a%20lid-switch-unplug.jpg Do not leave it bypassed if you have small children or braindead brother in laws. a%20coupling.jpg A 3 piece drive coupling

How do you clear a od error code on a maytag fav6800aww

I agree with fastnhonda troubleshooting. I will just toss out some additional info. I’m an owner like you just trying to troubleshoot from a distance. The OD alarm is signaled by the control board when the control board has not seen a lid open signal from the left lid lock for three completed wash cycles. Could be corrosion issues with the left lid lock and or plug connecting to the left lid lock. If you pull the power plug on the machine then re-power up does the “OD” alarm clear? This might clear the “OD” alarm for three wash cycles. If it does can you do this; open the washer lid and start a Spin Only cycle with the lid open do you throw an OP (Lid Is Open) alarm to the console? If so do you clear the “OP” alarm when you close the lid? I’m checking the signaling functionally of the Left Lid Lock assembly of the magnetic reed relay and lid magnet thru the left lid lock and plug back to the control board.
If no results come from above testing and you want to DIY the repair I would remove the left lid lock (remove the left lid lock as shown on page 34 of the SM) and inspect for corrosion issues as the other forum member speaks to and a possible broken wire connection on the magnetic reed relay. See the red & black wire going to magnetic reed relay switch as shown in the pic. below. Note the black wire is broken away from one end of the magnetic reed relay do to corrosion. If you take apart the left lid lock the tabs holding the case halves together break off very easy so be careful on disassembly. I would not replace the right lid lock just yet. Removing the plugs on the lid locks is difficult so be careful. I would remove the left lid lock and inspect and clean up wih WD-40 if there are corrosion issues such as shown below or a broken wire (re-solder) on the magnitic reed relay. If this doesn’t resolve the “OD” alarm I would then replace the left lid lock only at this time. The right lid lock is not needed for normal washer operation.

Support info;

Left Lid Lock always give you pats supplier you machine model number when ordering parts. No machine serial number is required for this part.
The Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

Disconnect the washer power cord.
To raise the top of the machine. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base. See page 33 of the SM for putty knife insertion point.
