After (successful) restoration of desktop 838GM, boot-up get stuck at black screen with message that "NTLDR is compressed, press ctrl alt del to restart". When I do the ctrl alt del, computer reboots but...

The startup files are corrupted. You need to put the windows disk in the DVD and make the computer boot off that when it starts up. Booting off the DVD may need to be set in the BIOS if the machine does not do it automatically.
When the window comes up you select install windows.
Second option is repair my computer. Then follow the prompts.

My card reader on my gateway laptop used to work but it no longer does. Nothing shows up in my computer. I have not installed anything recently other than microsoft updates. I am running windows vista home

Go to the device manager, Uninstalled the device and then restart the computer. The driver will get installed automatically and then it will work again.

You can also uninstall the updates and then check. If its a problem with Windows update then dont install the updates for the time being. Wait for more patches to be introduced from Microsoft.

Thanks

Every time i restart my computer on the black boot screen it gives me an option to start windows vista or enter windows vista setup i recently tried to upgrade to vista ultimate and it didnt work now its...

Do you have any important files that you want to keep?

If so, when the boot screen comes up, select to start windows vista and press F8. choose "Safe Mode". copy all of your files to a flash drive or burn them to a disk.

If not, insert your vista DVD and have your BIOS boot from it.
then it will ask you to do an upgrade or clean install; do a clean install.

Do not interrupt the installation until it finishes.
If you made any backups, now is the time to copy them to your computer.

MY LABTOP KEEPS SHUTING DOWN. I TURN IT ON IT SHUTDOWN AUTOMATICALLY AND THEN RESTARTS.

Does the laptop POST? does it boot up windows? or do the lights go on.... then off.... then on... etc?

if it starts booting windows then restarts itself then there is probably a problem with your windows install, it is crashing and that automatically restarts the pc.

If the lights keep flashing you probably have a hardware failure (motherboard)

Black screen comes up "windows did not start successfully...." choose from safe mode, safe mode with networking etc Last known Configuration or Start Windows Normally. Computer then tries to...

You should opt Safe Mode:
  • On the black screen just navigate throug up and down arrow keys.
  • Goto Safe Mode and press enter.
  • It will boot your system in safe mode.
If the boot is success full:
  • try to remember any software or hardware you recently installed/change. Then remove/uninstall that software/hardware. Also remove some device driver like Video/Audio driver and make re-start. and try to normal boot. If success then install your audio/video.
If no success then I think its time to re-install your windows.
Please post your feed-back.
