Question about Kenmore 36 in. 33384 / 33385 / 33389 Gas Cooktop

1 Answer

Hey there, My wife washed the cooktop, apparently with too much water, so the igniters didn't work. Attempting to light the burner while the unit was wet messed something up--to the point that one control knob almost caught fire from what I assume was a short from the water in the unit. Now, the unit is dry and still doesn't work, and still wants to catch fire. Do I need a new switch hanress? And, if so, any hints on removing the top?

I took the unit apart, no more moisture, but switch harness is shorted, burnt, and shot. Ordered replacement--pretty simple overall--thanks!

Come on my dear it cannot just be a switch harness you need to check the whole cooktop if there is water still some where hidden inside it can develop into serious short circuit...It is quite very dangerous for you. so take it apart and check out cfompletely. If possible have a service call...

You're right--taking it apart was the next move. If I remove a particular control knob, I can see where it's shorting under what appears to be a ceramic plate on the switch harness. I don't have the paperwork with the unit, as the PO had it installed, and troubleshooting a gas cooktop is new to me.

I assume all of the burner bowls need to come off first and then the cooktop simply lifts off...obviously, I haven't got too far into the project yet. My hope was to solicit some internet advice first to see if anyone had similar experiences. Service calls tend to be a measure of last resort.

Thanks for the response. Any last thoughts are appreciated.

I have a frigidaire cooktop FFGC3613LS two top buners do not ignite.

Hello hgodoy2 - If you only have an issue with two burners not lighting, then you might have a clogged valve. This is not something you should clean on your own if you have never done this before. I would contact a professional or your manufacturer first. You could also have a blocked or bad valve which would require a full repair service call.

MY wife boiled over her tea pot of water and now the pilots on all four burners continue to click as if you turn on the gas to light the stove.

The water has shorted out at least one of the igniter switches. Disconnect power to the unit and let it dry out for several hours and it should be just fine.

Large burner elements ignite, and igniter spark fails to stop, then the burner shuts off as if ignition failed. Tiny central burner element does NOT light at any time. Apparently the safety cutoff...

There is a thermistor that must be in the flame area that needs to get hot. When hot it will turn the igniter off and keep the flame on. Check it's location and if it is in the flame then it needs to be replaced. not sure about the central flame problem. could be the switch.

Gas was turned off and igniters keep clicking?

As I did not see what occurred, I suspect that the tea kettle boiled over and sent water into the burners. The igniters kept clicking and I eventually turned the gas back on. Will have to replace one igniter which apparently went out and have to light it manually at this point.

Kitchenaid gas ccoktop electronic ignition continues to click

We called in an appliance repair technician. He said during the cleaning process of the cooktop, when the control knobs had been removed to thoroughly clean the cooktop, some cleaning fluid or water or moisture got into the ignition switch panel under the cooktop. Letting it dry for 24 hours should fix the problem and this appears to have done that.

(2) front Burner igniters on my new Matag 30" Cooktop continue to click

Sounds like water got into one of the switches. This usually happens when you wash the knobs. Water stays in the holes and runs down the shaft when replaced. Maytag has issued a recall on some stoves because this can be a fire hazard. UNPLUG THE COOKTOP UNTIL THIS IS FIXED!!!!!!!!! This has happened to me with a whirlpool unit and it tripped a breaker and shot sparks across the kitchen. First go to Maytags web site and see if yours has a recall. If so Maytag will fix it free. While you are waiting leave stove unplugged and light with a match. If you need to fix this yourself disconnect the wires from the two switches this should stop the sparking. Connect one switch at a time and see which switch is bad. Most of the time the electric part of the gas valve can be replaced seperately. and you can do this yourself. If you must actually disconnect a gas pipe unless you really know what you are doing call for service.

Not igniting

Probably broken switch. or perhaps broken ignitor circuit. If only one burner is broken is then it is switch. if they all don't work check the ignigitor circuit.
