My tiller wont go into forward gear. Reverse is fine but wont shift at all. I lubed it well and the tiller does not have a lot of use. Any suggestions.

When I inspected the gear box it seems as if I need to disassemble the entire tiller. Does this seem right to you? Seems like a lot of work to accomplish this.
    Thanks for the help.

Do I have to remove the tines and the motor. I got all the external screws undone as well as many others and have removed the flywheel. Thanks a million!

Sounds like a problem in the gearbox if there is no external interference problems with the shift mechanism. It may require opening and inspecting the gearbox.

Yeah, I hate to tell you but that is the case. I just did a repair on a RT MTD gearbox. From the time I started to remove the gearbox to the time I bolted it all back together was 3 1/2 hours. Big job trust me I know. lol Let me know if I can help.

When you get it open, try to look at the shifter. It will be the the piece that your external shift linkage connects to. It could be bent or the pins worn down. I usually grind the old pins out and replace with the correct size piece of drill bit. Good luck.

Yes, the tines have to come off and the gearbox will have to be separated from the engine. Once you get this done get you some boards to prop up the gear box on your bench so the shafts are not touching. You will then be able to split the gearbox open. Remember to pay close attention to how stuff comes apart. If you can, take digital close up pictures to help you reassemble.

Changed the transmission fluid on my automatic, not vehicle wont go into reverse.

Are you sure you put the correct amount in? Sounds like when it's cold the fluid settles on the bottom. But when it warms up, the fluid starts to travel and not be enough to lube and cool the gears. Check you owners manual or compare what you took out with the amount you put in.

What could the problem be with 1999 villager wont go forward or reverse?

I forget the name, but it could be the shift connecttion. It the connection point behind the shifter in the car and the transmission. The port disconnected mine in my car cause they couldn't figure out how to shift it. It basically put the car into nuetral. No forward no reverse. But engine runs fine.

Try lubing the linkage where it shifts from forward and to reverse the linkage is most likely freezing up or has snow or ice build up causing it not to shift, My thought is your shoving it hard enough that it finally engages when you get the snow or ice to break off.

Shifter handle is lock in reverse. will not move to forward. or engage tines in eitherer directions.it stays reverse travel. shifted fine then went to move it then i couldn't move it. but in reverse

Hi,
The gears are crossed up in the transmission.
You may get lucky if you try with the engine OFF,turning the trans pulley in the direction opposite of which the motor turns. This might unlock the internal gears.
Sorry for your problem. I know it is time to get the ground ready.
