It starts fine, but when I put it in gear to go forward or reverse it dies. It also dies ... The engine on my riding mower will start and run while the clutch is pushed in.

carb could have an obstruction . gas in sediment bowl burns ,mower dies, wont start again until gas has trickled back in to fill bowl.

sounds like you may have a bad coil. you getting gas but no spark if its sputtering can cutting out or it may just need re gapped

Sound like the switch may be at fault. Can you bypass the switch and engage the blade, if soI would replace the switch.

Check everything is clean. Check the air filter is clean, check that the engine cooling fan, cutting blades and cutting deck are free of grass. Check all the drive belt pulleys to ensure accumulated grass is not jamming anything. Check the fuel filler cap is clean and the breather hole works.

carburetor needs cleaning and rebuilding

your carb. is gunked up. get a can of starter fluid and a helper. have the helper spray some starter fluid into the air intake to keep it running after it starts. Once it runs for a couple of minutes it will be ok. J.

Find the fuel air mixture screw and while the mower is running turn so mower almost stops then turn them back till the moter is running smoother.Give it some throtle to see & hear how it is running
