Question about Boating

1 Answer

I have a 2180 Ranger Bay and I love this boat, but it porpoises alot. More so on calm water. Choppy water seems to make it ride better. I also feel it want to release and run faster when it comes off of a little bit of wave or choppy water.

I suspect it is the tilt angle on your outboard that needs looking at and if that doesn't do it you might think about getting a set of the fins that clamp on the cavitation plate which should help.
Another thing that might help is you might find you need to redistribute the stuff stowed in the boat further toward the ends as if you have all the weight in the middle it will contribute to your problem

After doing and replacing alot of parts truck shuts off after going 500ft or less and will not restart until it seems like it has had time to cool down. I feel like it could be something in the ignition...

Possible fuel pump issue or fuel filter, or maybe even water/trash in gas tank. With fuel tank, movement of vehicle 'floats trash' in tank and fills fuel in-tank filter choking fuel flow. After vehicle ceases movement, trash settles to tank bottom clearing fuel filter.

What problems or benefits will I get with an aluminium boat hull

Aluminum boats are easier to maintain, will last longer than fiberglass, and are easier to repair. You can also bump into things without causing damage like you would to a fiberglass hull.

The only real advantages to fiberglass are that it looks better due to the gelcoat finish, providing that it is maintained, they also feel more solid in the water due to the extra weight, and they tend to ride better and are quieter than an aluminum hull.

One other consideration is whether you will operate it in fresh water or salt water. Salt water can lead to corrosion problems on an aluminum hull if you leave it in the water. Fiberglass doesn't have that problem, but you can have a problem with blistering if you leave a fiberglass boat in the water for long periods, especially if you don't use a bottom coat of some sort.

If you do opt for an aluminum boat in salt water, just make sure that you spray it down with fresh water and wipe it down with a soft towel whenever you take it out of the water. This is actually a good practice for any boat, aluminum or fiberglass.

Handling seems alittle loose

I wouldn't think one as new as yours would have swingarm problems. Have you checked your air shocks lately? The FLHTC has air assisted suspension on the front and rear as best as I can remember.

One other thing, I have heard people complain about Dunlop tires. They say that they don't like them because of that problem. I've never noticed a problem with Dunlops but I ride a Wide Glide. I have recently changed to Metzler 880's tires. They seem to handle well but the braking is not too good on them. The rear tire will lock up and never make a sound. You don't know it's locked until the bike tries to go sideways a bit. Not good.

Good Luck

1998 Champion 181 bass boat in California...It appears that livewell is leaking into bilge,...and the aeration pump is not working? Could it be the pump? or a fitting at the base of the live well...by the...

try "duct tape" the fittings and drain to seal those areas, refill and see if water is still leaking, if so it's your live-well is cracked somewhere, and can be repaired on the inside with fiberglass resin..... if not then most likely the fittings/pump/hoses/etc....yes its a pain .Champions don't have alot of room to access any of that...got a Ranger myself....hope this helps and see you on the water....GL
