Battery exhausted after only a few pictures

Is this camera having battery problems? I have had mine for several years with no problems, and good battery life. When I turned it on last week it said battery exhaused. I put in new batteries, took maybe 10-15 shots, and then when on vacation. I took around 15-20 more shots and all of a sudden I got the same battery exhausted message. I just tested the batteries and they are still good.

There are different Mah ratings on rechargeable batteries. Check your owner's manual and see what amperage rating the battery should have. Then check the amp rating of your replacement battery.
I've found that cheaper batteries are available and they're cheap for a good reason...they don't work well.
I would suggest going with Nikon batteries if you haven't done so already...
I think you'll find a great difference in service life.

This could be corrosion, or oxidation on the battery terminals inside the computer. You will have to clean them with a qtip and alcohol, or pencil eraser, or whatever you can reach them with. When the terminals get slightly corroded, they draw more current from the battery, shortening it's life, even if they're new. Try to clean the terminals as well as you can, and hopefully it will help. Otherwise, the unit will require service. Make sure you get an estimate before having it fixed, though, since the cost of repair can easily exceed the cost of a new camera on sale. Good luck, hope this helps.

Battery exhausted warning

Hello justplainles:

Do the others show the same problem?

Try this: RESET ALL in the menu or setup menu.
If that does not work, make sure that the in the menu (if it is there) you set the battery type to rechargeable not alkaline .
You may try alkaline batteries, if it does the same, the camera may need repair.

Some cameras will not set the battery type automatically.

Nikon coolpix L4 won't take pictures & turns off

I have the same camera & personally, I hate it. My camera does that all the time, sometimes, it takes a while for the picture to actually take. Try holding down the button for a while, that's what I have to do with mine. The camera sucks up all the battery energy with only a few picture takes which I really don't understand. I think that's also why it's cutting off while you're using it. Does the phrase, "Warning: Batteries exhausted" sound familar, especially right before the camera shuts off? Oh, & before I go, my personal advice to you is: Get a new camera. I don't even know why I bought mine, soon I'm getting a new one. Yay. I hope this helped you, sorry about the camera problems. Much luck! :D

Battery getting exhanusted

Sounds like you need to call Canon. I use Energizer e2 batteries and take 700 pictures and several videos during a show I attend and still have battery life. Even with normal batteries you should be able to take several hundred pictures. Are you still under warranty?

*ist D Grip problem

i have yet to recieve the b-grip for my *ist so i can't tell you if i have the same problem. i do have a thought on the matter and an interest in the fix as i have a grip on order. have either or both of you upgraded to firmware 1.1? that is not listed as something the firmware update remedies. however, i understand that manufacturers often include fixes for less conspicious problems without listing them. if you haven't upgraded it's worth a shot, you have nothing to loose as long as you use FRESH batteries. hope i helped. have fun shooting.
