Those units are self adjusting. No way to adjust it. It sounds like you have a bad idler pulley or a bad spindle bearings, which would cause the pulleys to be out of alignment.

The serial # of the tiller should be stamped directly above the right wheel on the transmission housing. This should give you more info to work from.

I also was having issues with an old 5 horse Troy Built tiller that would fire when gas was in the tank then stop running. If it's a Briggs and Stratton engine like the one I have it's probably you can remove the muffler to gain access to the side of the carb. Remove the four screws and the cover off the fuel pump diphram and check to make sure that the rubber isn't cracked or degraded. I replaced the one I had and it now runs like a champ.

I have a 5 hp troybilt pony tiller. The axle seals need replacing can you describe the best way to replace them. This tiller was built in Feb. of 1990.

Go to this website and type in PONY for your model number and find your operator manual by your serial number. The operator manual should have detailed instructions on how to replace your seals.
On the Horse model you remove the wheels and then carefully use a couple of screw drivers to pry out the old seals being careful not to scratch the wheel shaft sealing area. Then polish the wheel shaft with fine emery cloth to remove any sharp edges. Then grease the wheel shafts and carefully slide the new wheel seals on and use a piece of plastic PVC pipe cut square that will slide over the shaft and gently drive the seal to the depth the old seals were installed at. You dont even have to drain the gear oil. Getting the wheels off the wheel shaft is sometimes a problem if they are rusted on. if you can get the wheels off its not to hard to change the seals.

It sure sounds like the engine got hot one to many times and the oil rings are stuck to the piston. It isn't shot it just needs some maintenance. If your a fair mechanic the rings are about $36.00 I would also hand lap the valves with grinding compound. Beats a buying a new motor or mower. Your parts manual is MS5535_F_LO.pdf and can be found at this link:
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/docmanualdetails.aspx?showpdf=MS5535_F_LO.pdf

You call but I would fix it if the rest of the unit is fine. Your not going to hurt it any more than it already is by continuing to use it. It will just smoke.. probably foul a few plugs and use more oil along with get harder to start from oil coking on the exhaust valve seat. Like I said.. when the time is right I would fix it.

1985 dodge powerwagon, lights went dim driving home now wont start, just replaced battery 6 months ago. starter clicked at first then nothing.

The alternator may not be charging the battery. Jump start it, and use a volt meter at the battery, red lead to positive and black to neg. The meter should read between 13 and almost 15 volts, any lower than 13 volts, the alternator is no good. (this is done with vehicle running).

Check under the metal or plastic cover just behind the engine. This covers the forward and reverse belts. Your belt either broke, jumped off fthe pulley, or needs a tension adjustment.

Most likely the carburetor jet is still clogged after sitting for years with fuel in it. Putting injector/carb cleaner in the fuel tank may help, but if not, the jet needs to be soaked some more -- or replaced.

Follow mixing proportions on the label for injector cleaner.
