Sony KP53S75 Problems

I have a Sony rear projection television ( 53” model KP53S75, serial no. 9519148 RA3A, manufactured and purchased in the year 2000) that has some problems and I am trying to determine if the cost of repairs is worth it, so I would like some specific idea as to the cost of repair. The television has been with me in India for the past four years and was recently shipped back to the USA by sea freight. It has the following problems:

1. The unit will not power up and the self diagnostic light blinks four times. I did some looking around on the internet and it seems to be identified as: “Vertical deflection has stopped so IC509 ( vertical out) is defective or the vertical pulse buffer Q1505 is defective.” What would be a ballpark estimate of the cost of repair? The unit is too large for me to bring it to the shop, so it would have to be a home service call; we live in the metropolitan Washington DC area.

2. The mirror is broken. When the unit did not power up I opened the back for a look and noticed some glass shards inside. When I touched the mirror about ½ of it shattered and fell apart (lucky I did not cut my hand off!); I assume it was fractured in shipment. A search around the internet located a site that sells the mirror for $180. Is this a reasonable price and could a layman replace it? What would be a ballpark estimate of the cost of repair for a home service call?

3. The lamps have never been replaced and the unit is 10 years old, what is their approximate service life and will these likely need replacement anytime soon? If so, what would it cost?

4. Lastly, the inside circuit boards look like the inside of a vacuum cleaner bag; after being in India for four years the inside is coated in thick dust and grime. Perhaps this caused problem No. 1, I don’t know, should this be cleaned up and would a service technician be the best one to do it, what would be the cost?

It’s been a great television and I hate to part with it, but given how much new television prices have come down, and the problems and the age of this one; I don’t know if it is worth it……..

Many thanks

2002 Sony KP53s75 is it worth repair?

Ok, 5 times is an akb problem, and without red, this tells me one of three things are most likley wrong either the red tube is too weak to produce return current to the akb circuit, or you have a bad driver on the crt board or you have a defective focus block. There are several diagnostics that need to be done to determine which one is the cause, if you are un familure with electronic repair it could be a little hazardus to do, so i don;t recommend it unless you are aware of the issues. If you swap the neck modules with the blue tube, and the set looses blue then it is not the tube. and might be worth repairing. but again if you don't have experience it may not be a good idea for you to try this yourself.
