Need wiring diagram for starter on a 1999 or 2000 johnson ocean pro outboard

If it were that simple I wouldn't need help. There are 4 black wires. 3 red wires, and one yellow. The statter is sitting verticle with the gear on top. Small yellow and small black are on two little post on the bottom/oppositeend of the gear. Large red and two smaller red wires all to side/horizontal large copper post. I have 2 smaller black wires on one mounting bolt, and the larger on the other mounting bolt.

Turn the key and i can hear the gear running, but not enguaging the fly wheel.

I have tried two good statrers and both are experiencing the same problem.

Do you have a wiring diagram for a 99 or 2000 150 hp johnson ocean pro? Or an experienced outboard mechanical answer.

I need an marine mechanic with expertise on outboard motors not someone to research finding a repair manual. I want to know how to wire my starter from an expert.

I am working on a picture for you. But seeing your comments I do not think your problem is related to a wiring issue. This type of starter is a centrifugal engagement. I will send a picture if you think it will help. As the starter spins it pushed out the small gear to engage the flywheel. If 2 other starters have done the same thing I would think something is out of adjustment, meaning the starter mount. If the starter gear cant engage the flywheel some thing is keeping it from spinning out. Do you have a good hot battery? Can you see the starter as it turns, it is reaching the flywheel? Check this and repost with what you see.

Mount is perfect it will only go in one way. My battery is fairly new, worked fine two days ago. I will try another good battery because is is an easy test. The starter spins when I turn the key, but sounds to weak to pop up. I even tried it with a rolling charger on quick start connected to the battery. With so many wires I keep thinking one is out of place. that's why I was hoping to be conversing with an outboard mechanic who has access to the manual with diagram.

One way to test the starter is with a set of jumper cables. Hook them to a battery, the black to a ground on any metal part of the engine, then with the red or positive cable touch the post at the small yellow wire you see on the bottom solenoid. It may will throw sparks so watch for any fuel or flammable stuff. The starter should pump out the small gear on top it may not turn if you do not have the main red wire hooked up. The small yellow and black wires are the solenoid that causes the starter to engage the flywheel. The black are ground wires, the yellow is hot from a switch or key switch.

I can get a picture but it is not great. --

I tried the jump to the yellow but it does the same thing as turning the key. Gear spins but not enguaging the fly wheel. Tried jumping starting battery to a new deep cycle battery with same results. I have a tough one here. I see you are on the right track and know what starter Im dealing with. A diagram from an authorized omc mechanic may be my only solution.

Here see if this helps ----------

Next would be to spray a little wd 40 or graphite on the starter gear shaft. Thats all I got, Be sure all your connections are good and tight, all clean, battery hot, grounds good and tight and clean..

I found a site that you can purchase the Repair Manual that has the wiring diagram in it. I have not been able to find the diagram for that year anywhere so far. Here is the link to get to the manual I hope this helps you. Randy FixYa Support Team

I found one original service manual that had been sold on Ebay. Here is the link to that site: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=283812
Go there, and find the person named "HybridMX6"- he's the one that bought the manual. If you join the site (it's free), you might be able to message him through it and see if he will be kind enough to make you copy. That's the best lead I have, but I will keep looking. As you know, it's not going to be easy unless you just happen to find an owner, but it's worth a shot. Good luck, hope this helps!

save yourself some money and go get a lawn mower solenoid and find a way to mount it yourself. I have done a johnson outboard and a tigershark jet ski this way with no problems.
