All conections are HDMI on a PLasma 1080p panasonic vierra. any thoughts? could this be a cheap cable issue?

Well i had the PS3 and the tv for a while now, they used to be hooked up by HDMI and a fiber optic cable going to the receiver. that was fine never saw this problem... Add the new sony receiver to the mix and problem starts..

I am going to try the cable i know the one that its using is ok.. standard 20.00 3ft cable. going to try something a little better shielded or at least that looks that way :)

Problem is not consistent for sure. Very random. What is strange is i play video games on it and I never loose the signal? Only seems to happen on dvd/bd playback. Thanks for help !! I'll let you know about the cable..

Try updating your PS3 firmware by connecting it to internet and using its setting menus to start the firmware update. IIRC some early PS3 firmwares kept loosing HDMI signal occasionally.

I have two ps3's.. ONe is about 5 years old and one it aboput 2 years old. Both experience the same thing.. Last nite it kept going to black so often i had to pause the movie every time it blacked out. Note htis wasnt a blue ray movie jsut aDVD. THough it does it with BD movies as well.. sucks may have to go but a Sony blueray player to play nice with my Sony Reciever... Sucks!

Ok don't go buying Sony BD player before you have checked that one of your PS3 has the latest firmware V3.30.

Then try to connect PS3 straight to TV or without linking it through receiver use the HDMI cable that you suspect to be the lowest quality.

Also if possible try with somebody elses TV. Some TV models also seem to have problems of loosing HDMI signal every now and then and if that is the case there is not much than taking TV to service and hoping they can correct the issue by updating its firmware.

There are also a lot of receivers with less reliable HDMI passthroughs.

PS3 is the source here where HDMI signal comes from and it can be either PS3, Sony receiver or Panasonic TV that is loosing the signal.

As you said cheap HDMI cables could be the reason to and they are the most cheap ones to be replaced too. Although HDMI is digital interface, it also can be affected by interference. Some HDMI cables may have less protection for interference. There must be standard specs for HDMI cables how big % of metal shield they must have under the plastic to shield the wires.

I have seen same standard specs for USB cables which are also digital and peeled some bad quality USB cables only to find that they are redically under the standardized specs and barely contain metal shield. These cables caused USB devices to fail every now and then. So as a conclusion, we can expect same problems with HDMI cables where standardization is not valid.

I'm sure no-one wants to peel their cables to verify this, but if you have same lenght cables you could atleast measure their weight to see how much metal they contain or buy see-through cables to make sure they are well shielded.

My ps3 plays games but will not play blu ray movie

You can try clear your movie data from the discs you\'ve played (according to Fox that\'s sometimes the culprit when a disc won\'t even load): restart your PS3 and go to the video menu and scroll up to the BluRay Data section. Go into it and check that it has saved some info for your movies. Now deleted all the data in this folder except the shared data crap, and hopefully your movies start perfectly!!

If that fails try the following:

In the XMB(menus) go to Settings ---> BD/DVD Settings ---> BD 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI). Turn that off. This has also been known to work.

Configuring a Sony STRDH510 - 3 HDMI & 1 composite input

Is the composite/analog signal going into the same input as one of the hdmi's? i.e. DVD,BD, etc.? If so, the receiver can only look at one of those signals at a time. To use two different signal types going into the same function, you will have to manually select where you want the receiver to look - either hdmi, analog, optical, etc. The receiver defaults to auto-selecting which signal to look at, and will always look for a hdmi signal if one is available.

My new 3.15 ps3 won't play blu-ray but will play everything else no problem. no problems to play games or to play normal dvd's. When playing a blu-ray the UNIVERSAL part at the start of the movie plays...

f the Blu-ray Disc does not support 1080p 24Hz video mode, the video output may not display properly.

If a Blu-ray Disc movie is not loading properly or is freezing on a title screen, this may be caused by the PLAYSTATION 3 attempting to download BD-Live content from congested movie studio servers. If you experience this issue, you may choose to temporarily bypass the BD-Live content until the congestion at the movie studio servers has cleared.

Go to Settings icon (Settings) > Video Settings icon (Video Settings) > [BD Internet Connection], select "Confirm". Then reload the Blu-ray movie and the PLAYSTATION 3 will prompt you if you wish to allow the disc to access BD-Live content. Choose to not access BD-Live content to see if the movie will now load.
For some reason you seem to think this is a PS3 problem. Why do you think this is a PS3 problem? If you can play PS3 games, then I will say it is not a PS3 problem, as all PS3 games are on Blu-ray, and if you were having problems playing PS3 games, then that could account for the movie not working.

Since only the movie isn't working, I am going to say you have a defective Blu-ray disc. Did you just buy this movie, or have you viewed it before using the PS3? If you have never viewed it on the PS3, then the problem lies in the disc, and you need to take it back and have it exchanged.

If you have played the disc in the PS3 before (the PS3 you are having a problem with, not a different PS3 or Blu-ray player), or you still think it is a PS3 problem, then use the "Disc Troubleshooting" support page. Normally, if a Blu-ray movie will not play, it won't play at all, and it is because the Blu-ray laser has gone out. It sounds to me that the disc is bad, but this is only going on the information you have supplied.

Here is the Disc Troubleshooting support page mentioned above:http://playstation.custhelp.com/app/answ…

**EDIT**
Sorry, I just noticed you gave a UK link. Here is the support page for the UK. You will have to do a search on the site to find the Disc Troubleshooting page for your region.http://uk.playstation.com/support/

PS3 Won't Play Blu-Ray

If there is no picture on the TV screen: Back to top
  • Check that the input mode of the TV is appropriate for the connector in use on the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system.
  • There may be a problem with the cable in use. Try using another cable that is compatible with the PLAYSTATION®3.
  • If the video output settings on the PLAYSTATION®3 do not match those of the cable or TV in use, there may be no picture. If the screen goes blank, turn off the system.
  • Then, with only the PLAYSTATION®3 and the TV connected, touch the system's power button for more than 5 seconds to turn the system back on. The video output settings will automatically be reset to the standard resolution.
If the DVD or Blu-ray Disc™ (BD) cannot be played, or the picture is distorted: Back to top
  • When outputting DVD content or PLAYSTATION®3 system format software in SD resolution, only discs recorded in the NTSC standard can be played.
  • If the PLAYSTATION®3 is connected to a VCR or a combination TV/VCR unit, copy protection encoding on some DVDs and BDs may cause image distortion, or may cause the image to become lighter or darker. In such cases, connect the system to the TV directly.
  • If the DVD or BD does not match the region code set in the PLAYSTATION®3, it cannot be played.
  • Some DVDs are preset with parental control restrictions. Enter the password that was set in "Security Settings" to temporarily increase the viewer age restriction level.
  • Some BDs are preset with parental control restrictions. Enter the password that was set in "Security Settings" to change the parental control level.
  • The BD may be disc-locked. Enter the password that was set when the disc was created.
if non of that works you need to contact Sony at

Games run on hdmi, but not Blu-ray movies

You most likely have the updated drivers. You may have to go and change a setting. I found an answer on the PS3 website that may be of some use to you. I hope this helps you: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=1662191 From the site: "go to bd/dvd setting and set the "108024hz" option off"
