Question about Kenmore 53582 / 53584 Side by Side Refrigerator

Open Question

Freezer and Refrigerator -- Not Cooling

Kenmore Cold Spot Side-By-Side
M/N 106.53582300 Mfg Date: October 2003

Neither the freezer or refrigerator are cold/cooling. This is a secondary refrigerator located in basement. It is relatively clean and probably opened no more than three times per week.

The lights come on and the fan is running inside the freezer. There is no ice build up or water present in the freezer or refrigerator. The door seals are tight and the coils underneath are clean. Area around refrigerator is the same as it has been for last several years. I have not tested anything, but I cannot hear the compressor running.

What are the logical steps for component testing? If the compressor is not running, I suspect the following components: thermostat, relay, overload or capacitor, defrost timer, condenser fan motor, etc.

I would like to know the best order of things to check and how to check the various components. I appreciate your advice and guidance.

Thank you.

Mike

SOURCE: kenmore freezer and fridge is not cold - not frost build up - compress anf fans are all running

You need a qualified technician for this problem.
- Your unit may have leaking try to check for oil traces.
- The system maybe restricted, system reprocess is needed for this unit.
- If the unit is no frost try to check if there is an air circulation inside the unit. If no air is present then check your fan motor inside.

SOURCE: Kenmore 596.72913200 Refrigerator is Warm, but Freezer is Cold

There should be a push in switch on the door frame that you can push to see if the evaporator fan is functioning. You will be able to hear it when you push in on the switch.

If your problem is defrost related you will see frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer . If it is defrost related it will be ether the timer, heater, or defrost thermostat that is your problem. If it is the timer, locate where the timer is. Sometimes located in the area of the temperature controls with a hole through which you can turn a clutch head screw clockwise very SLOWLY until you hear one audible click. This will start the defrost. if after 30 minutes it defrosts but does not start cooling again turn the screw just a little further and you will hear another click. The compressor should start. If this is you conditions the timer needs to be replaced. If it fails to defrost and restarts to cooling mode after 18-22 minutes the problem is in the defrost heater circuit.

SOURCE: Freezer cold. Refrigerator very warmer.

Hi there. This should be a self defrosting unit. Check the defrost clock. It's usually behind the grill at bottom front of frig. or near the compressor. There is probably a little window on the clock motor where you can see it turn. You can manually advance the clock to put the unit into defrost mode. Check the defrost heating element. This is the usual problem. It is under shrouds where all the frost builds up. If element good, check defrost thermostat connected to element mechanically and in series electrically.
Thanks
Paul
