The phone just shows the hourglass for a few seconds, then it resets itself (screen goes dark) and then it restarts with the hourglass. Then it all continues the same procedure. I have tried to remove the batteries, even for long periods of times. But I can't get it to stop this behavior. The phone is a an S44, not a S440, not sure if that matters.

First of all what you need to do is to perform a reset on your BB by hitting ALT+RIGHT SHIFT+DEL your blackberry will reset itself. It will go black for about 2 to 4 seconds then you will see the famous blackberry hourglass. Be patient and in about 2 to 5 minutes your blackberry will reset.
ALT+RIGHT SHIFT+DEL can be used for continuous hourglass issues, JVM Error 200 "White Screen" to name a few.

If that does not work then you should perform a battery pull by just pulling out the battery out of the phone while it is on this is also a reset option.

Try freeing up some space on your blackberry by deleting some unecessary files and do not run too many applications at once.

You "MAY" have to flash the drive. To do this, just hold down the start button for approximately 15 secs. You'll then see a dark screen with different command strings listed, after doing this it should restart itself, if not, then just turn the unit off again & back on to see if it has corrected itself & boots up as normal.
