Fairly easy operation and is standard accross laptops for years.

Get yourself some microdrive screwdrivers
This is all slow and steady..if you get annoyed or frustrated at any stage, walk away for a few minutes and take a breath.

  • Carefully remove the rubber stoppers at the top and bottom of the screen and put aside (you need these to go back in later)
  • Remove the screws and set aside (get a magnet to hold onto them if you can..they have a tendancy to run away)
  • Very gently starting at the middle bottom, lift the bezel up and out slightly. You will hear it pop as it releases.
  • Move around and do one side, then the other side leaving the top intact.
  • When you have the 3 sides free, start along the top. You will have to slide the lid catches out of the way to pop it near those sections and is why it is left until last.
  • After you have the bezel removed, you will be able to see the inverter at the bottom (sometimes on the side)
  • Remove the plugs from both ends being careful not to break any of the connectors, and install the new inverter
Test the laptop before you put it all back together.
Hope that helps =)

Borrow a monitor and plug it into the VGA port. That might tell you whether the graphics card is bad.

a virus wouldnt do that. it is prolly the screen itself, the backlight or the inverter. if you can hold a flashlight up to the screen and see a faint image, then it is probably the inverter.

My gateway 400sd4 screen is black but you can see it if you put a flashlight to it

Majority of the time it means that the inverter has gone out.

There are other less frequent causes as well including: bad lcd cable, bad lcd, bad graphics card.

9 out of 10 times though replacing the inverter will bring the screen back to life.

It's easy to swap out, it's pretty much the same process on a majority of laptops. Here's a tutorial for your model.

You can get a replacement part from eBay on the cheap.

Hope this info helps ;)

I have a gateway profile 4 and the screen does not turn anymore someone told me that i have to change the invertor or bulb can you help me?

Yes change the inverter first it is more common problem cost arround $15 on eBay. If the screen doesn't start or if has a week light you would have to change your screen (arround $90). As it is looks the inverter prob. assuming that nobody drop the laptop by accident. replace the bulb it will be more expensive than replace the screen because it is a lot of hours to work.

Blank screen

Try plugging the laptop into an external monitor to make sure the laptop is booting up properly. If it is unplug the monitor from the laptop; or if you know the laptop boots up fine and you get the windows audio when it boots and the initial starting beeps then forget the monitor. Shine a torch or light source on the screen and if you see a faint picture then the inverter on the screen has developed a fault.

Black screen

I suppose you are saying that the computer is powering up, however, you cannot see the video. In that case you have a bad graphic chip or video card. The gateway media centers came with built-in graphic chips. Thus, your system is dead.

You need to replace the system board.

When laptop is powered up, nothing shows on screen. I can here the audio intro but no display. Model is: MT3421

Try connecting an external monitor and see if it displays, if it displays OK you might have a problem with your inverter circuit or the back light of you laptop's LCD. If so you have to bring it to the repair shop. cheers.
