Try overriding it by putting a magnet on the base where the lid magnet touches.

It should have a schematic behind the control panel. If there is then you can find what color wires go's to the switch and cut them then connect them together with a wire nut.

If not then you will have to remove the top and the switch will be attached to the top. It has a long arm and switch is past the end of the drum. Then do it same way, Cross out wires.

First thing I would do is to take the Filler Hoses off (Make sure you turn the water off before disconnecting). There is a Screen in hose connector and it traps water. If the Hose Filter is not clogged, then you have an issue with the Selector Switch, Valve inside the machine, one of the Solenoid's or the Control Board has went bad. Start with the Easiest First, then work your way into the more difficult aspects...

Washer will not turn on. I think it is the lid switch. How can I get it to work by disconnecting lid switch? Splice wires?

A bad lid switch will make the washer not spin/drain it has no bearing on the fill.
The usual parts that could make it not fill are;
Water inlet valve
pressure switch

P1258 engine metal over temperature protection-\ is it the thermostat ,and if where is it located?? Thank-you.

Some Cadillac motors use a sensor called an engine metal temperature switch. This switch is usually located on one of the cylinder heads and normally has a one wire connector. It is small and can be difficult to locate. When you find it , try disconnecting it. If the problem goes away then the switch is bad. Be aware that the check engine light will probably come on if it isn't already and that this procedure may not work because it may need to be in the circuit for the system to operate. Good luck!

Steering rack replacement on a 99 cady deville, how difficult ?

Rather difficult. Involves disconnecting the tie rod ends. Steering linkage from steering wheel. Disconnecting the power steering pump lines and unbolting the rack and pinion from the body. Not a lot of room to get at stuff.

Phillips PET 706 portable DVD player. Won't play DVD's.

1. The pin, right side in the back of the dvd-tray-lid, which triggers the switch on the motherboard of the dvd player is broken.

2. Not impossible, but unlikely: the proper switch on the motherboard is broken, corroded or just full of dust and does not close the circuit.

Solution to 1.: you need a new lid with intact pin, or glue an improvised pin on place of the broken one.

Solution to 2.: take the whole player apart (not difficult at all), while not disconnecting any cables, so you can now test the trigger switch (momentary switch) manually and see if something happens (on screen appears loading)
ATTENTION: BEFORE pressing the SWITCH: cover the laser lens with a piece of paper - do not look into it - it can damage your eyes!!!
If nothing happens by manually triggering, try to spray some electronic cleaner (fat and oil free) into that switch, while pressing it continously. If still nothing happens, disconnect battery, DC, de-solder that switch and look at or any other electronic parts dealer to get a MOMENTARY switch with exact identical dimensions, etc.
Solder it in, everything should be perfect now.
Good Luck
