Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a Trane XE 1100 Heat Pump. It is not cooling. My air handler blower works. The outside fan does not. I changed out both capacitors. When you turn unit on you can hear the relay activate. Then only a hum. Is the fan motor bad or the relay? How do i test? The light on the module blinks once a second which is normal operation. Thanks

Probablly the fan. Do this test. Move the fan side to side. and up and down. Any more than 1000ths inch play and that motor is bad. When the bearing gets thin the rotor will rub the stator and lock up. This is called polling out. If the motor is stiff you can oil it with an HVAC approved oil called Zoomspout oil from ace hardware store. Zoomspout oil is non flammable temp resitant and is slow to disipate.

Trane XR15 not starting. Has power. There is a contact switch that when engaged the system fires up but coil gets cold but not circulating through the air handler. Could it be capacitor related?

So the contactor pulls in outside, the fan and compressor both start?? Then you say the coil gets cold... what coil is getting cold and is this a heat pump and are you trying to cool the house???

How do I fix my Trane air handler to keep it from turning off about 20 seconds after being commanded to turn on?

Some units require both a start and a run capacitor. It's possible the wrong capacitor was replaced. It's also possible to add a run capacitor to a system to keep the fan running. There is an outside chance the bearings in the fan motor are worn to the point it's time to replace the motor.

Problem with Air Conditioner

there will be an access panel where the motor is located. 1st thing to check is fuse or circuit breaker feeding the air handler. this is on seperate power from compressor unit outside and usually has a fused or breakered disconnect on the side of the unit. if fuses are good or breaker is not tripped then switch fan mode to on. if blower runs in on but not in auto then it is a thermostat problem. if still no go then turn off power, remove access panel and find the squirrel cage fan blade. make sure it turns freely. it is very common for these motors to go bad. it can usually be removed easily and taken to a motor shop. I use Roy's Electric in Richmond, Va. They can test the motor on the bench and replace it if it is faulty.

Trane XE 1100 outside fan works but no cool air in house

Without much to go on, it sounds like you have a leak and lost some charge. It could be many other things but this is a start. I would check to see if the compressor is running, and the indoor fan is running. Is the filter clean? Check these things first, and then call a contractor if they check out ok.

My trane xe 1000 central air conditioning unit turns on and the fan os working, but no air is coming into tue house. The lines get ice on them outside. I left it off all night with no change in status

If you left it off all night and no air is coming out of supply registers then the blower motor is not running. If the system is getting frost on the suction line(the big copper line coming out of the outside condensing unit with rubber insulation on it) within minutes of turning the system on then that will confirm that the blower motor is not running properly.
Unless you are very experienced in working on air conditioning, i would call a professional to do the repair.
If the motor has to be replaced its takes an experienced technician to do it correctly.
It could simply be the run capacitor on the blower motor.
This is probably going to be a 5 mfd capacitor.
Turn off all power to air handler, remove service panel, set your multi-meter to mfd (microfarads),
place the leads on the connections on top of the capacitors securely for 5 seconds. You should read about 4.8 to 5, if not the capacitor is bad.
There are other possible problems that could cause your symptoms, but ultimately your blower fan is not blowing air.

Trane xe 1000 - 1/4 fan motor went bad - I replaced it with a used 1/3 from another trane unit - it had same wiring harness etc everything starts, runs, cools -cold air - but only for about 5...

Did the 2 fans have the same rpm. If there is not enough airflow through the outside unit the compressor will shutdown on high discharge pressure. Also make sure the fan blades are positioned right if there is a shroud for them. Did the other motor have a capacitor with it or did you use the 1 from the smaller motor. Sometimes the motor data plate will tell you what size capacitor you need. Let me know what you find.

Why does my fan runs continus. and the condenser won't run out side.

The fan runs continously because your condensor is not kicking on and removing the heat. The thermostat needs to come under the set temp. to kick off the fan. If your compressor doesn't run and the fan on the outside unit does run, your compressor has an issue. If nothing runs outside, then your transformer on the inside unit(air handler) has an issue. This could also be a control relay on the condenser or the air handler.

Trane xe 1200, can i use the heat blower with out a working compressor, i need heat not air, thanks

you can switch the thermostat to "emergency heat" which will turn the outdoor section off and the thermostat will control the electric heat elements in the air handler if it has them.
