Question about Hayward SAND FILTER, PRO SERIES

1 Answer

Not filtering, back wash and waste won't work

When it is turned on the filter doesn't work, when it is flipped to backwash or waste it works somewhat fine. but when the vacuum is put in the whole it stops. no water goes through the tube and no dirt from the bottom. this was done numerous times with adequate time for the vacuum to work. but if we take the vacuum out and turn the pump off and then back on the backwash works again. it is an inground pool. how do we fix it.

Try consulting the owners manual for these pool filters. They have a whole section about the different settings on your multi-port valves. It also has a troubleshooting section.

Turn off the pump.Ensure a hose is connected to drainage on the waste outlet of the valve assembly. Make sure there are no kinks in the hose.Turn the valve to "backwash" (usually opposite of filter).Turn the pump on and run for 2 min.Turn off the pump and run on rinse for 15 seconds.Repeat until the glass jar on the waste line runs clear during backwash.Return to filter. (If you have a sand filter, your done. If you have a DE filter, add the correct amount of DE to your skimmer return while the pump operates. An 18X34 pool takes about 5-7lbs.)

How to use backwash to waste

When the filter get clogged the pressure in the filter increases and there is less water flow returning to the pool.
If your filter is a sand filter, when you turn the valve to backwash and turn on the pump it reverses the water flow in the sand filter to flush the dirt out of the filter to waste. Look at the window openning in the waste pipe and keep the backwashing goinging until you see clear water.
Then turn off the pump and move the control valve to Rinse, turn on the pump for a few minutes, this returns the water flow back to normal but the water goes to waste to make sure the sand filter is clean.
Turn off the pump and move the control valve to filter and turn on the pump. This mode is the normal operating mode and the pressure gauge in the sand filter will show a drop in pressure.
Some pressure gauge shows a red section to indicate when backwashing should be carried out.

When the filter head is in the filter postion, water is being discharged fromt the back wash/waste nozzel on the filter head.

You have a problem in the backwash valve. Take it apart and you are likely to find a defective part. If you can't get the parts right away you can plug the waste nozzel until the valve is fixed or you need to backwash. I hope this helps.

If I turn to back wash, will I lose sand. Should I use waste out to clean the filter

Backwash is meant to clean the sand and remove dirt from the filter.
Waste simply pumps the pool water to the drain line and doesn't clean the sand.
If the filter has its distributors, the sand should be held in the canister.

My pump is on filter but is draining the water out please help

The water Has to be going out the 'backwash' or 'waste' line.Either that or you have a leak in the plumbing. If the backwash/waste valve is set in the 'filter' position and there is still water escaping through the backwash/waste line, it means that the o-ring or spider gasket needs to be replaced or re-seated. If it is a multi-port valve (one that you spin to select the setting as opposed to a 'push/pull valve) you can try shutting off the pump; do a complete turn, 360 degrees, from the 'filter' setting all the way back to the 'filter' setting. This sometimes helps the spider gasket re-seat

My hayward sand filter will filter but the backwash and rinse does not work. What can be the problem?

Do you have a multi port valve or a push pull?

And what is the evidence it doesn't work???

Disassemble the valve and check the O rings or the spider gasket. If a multi-port ... you are suppose to turn it ONLY in a clock-wise direction.

Since yo mention rinse, Im guessing you have a multiport valve. You will not see much evidence of activity in this mode ... this blows the last little bit of backwash water out the waste line.

Do you have a site glass on your back wash?

No water coming out when I backwash. I cleaned

water level must be about the discharge (eyeball) in the pool to back wash. Check the hose connections to make sure that hoses off the the filer head are going to the right place Look for the words "Pump" , "pool" and "waste" molded into the valve. I've seen it a number of times where "Pump" and "pool" were connected the wrong way.
