Question about Amana AFD2535DES French Door Refrigerator
My refrigerator stays cold. However the Freezer portion gets above freezing and things will start to melt. It happens every few months and when the temperature in the house rises. You can feel air blowing when you open the freezer drawer but it never gets cold enough to freeze. I normally have to unplug, let it sit for about 15 mintues and replug it back in. After pulling it out the other day I found the fan in front of the compressor not running when it sound like everything else was on. Is this normal or possibly part of the problem? This refrigerator has had problems in the past where a puddle of water would all of a sudden form underneath it. No cause could be found??

Geezer, sounds like a defrost issue. I usually find the bi-metal to be the culprit on this model. Check out the pic. You will have to remove the back panel in the freezer and defrost the evaporator. Remove the ice maker if there is one. The back cover has 4 quarter inch screws. remove those. The air vent has 2 plastic clips one each side and one on the bottom, push in and pull the grill off. The thermistor cover has a slot for a flat blade screw driver, push in and pull the cover off. The thermistor will now slide behind the back panel. Check the bi-metal for buldging. As long as the evaporator fan is working, it's probably a defrost problem.

There is a vent that is connected from the freezer down to the fridge right where the fan is,make sure nothing is blocking it.

Low on refrigerant which is R 12. EPA has stopped the manufacture of it and it is priced out of sight.
You have a leak and will need it fixed. Compressor is about $300-400 list. You don't want to go there.
Good luck but likely 15-17 years old....... New one ???
