I'm sorry but the control panel that I have on top of the washer has two columns of button for various wash options, then moving to the right a start/pause button and under that an off button, there is then a two digit display then more buttons with water temperature selections. There is no end of cycle option, nor the option to select No SPIN. Am I just missing something?

    THanks

    David

BTW I can get into diagnostic mode by pressing EnviroPlus and Spin Only

Here's the exploded view diagram of you washer. It will help you determine the components breakdown and how they are assembled.

My apologies for the wrong post. It is supposed to be for another customer. Please wait for the right post.

Thank you for the exploded view, but I am having difficulty determining the actual problem. From the off state - the lock LED is lit even if the unit is not locked. When I press start - I can here the lock trying to engage but they don't. The unit then goes into PAUSE mode (start LED flashing).

Check the wiring connections of the lid lock and the reed switch to the machine control board and to the lock itself. Make sure the connections are snug fit. Reseat the connections several times to clean of dirt and corrosion build up in the terminals and connectors. Replace the lid lock assembly if there's no issue found in the wiring harness and the connections. The lid lock switch is welded causing the machine control to think it is always locked and light up the lid lock light.

Is it possible that just the locking mechanism is defective? When I run throught the diagnostics I can get both sides to lock but only one side to unlock. It leads me to think that one side is defective and causing the machine to remain in lock mode?

    Thanks

The issue is indeed just the locking mechanism as both locks lock during the diagnostics but only one side to unlock. Replace the defective lid lock to address the problem.

Dave,
I have been away from the board for a while just tired of offering help with no response. You look to be a true DIY type so if it’s not too late I will try to help. I’m a technical knowledgeable owner I’m not a repair person. Thank you for posting your model number. So many folks come to the FAV6800A forum with different machine types. This not being a true DIY forum this forum board does not prompt the owner for Model# and Serial Number.

If you don’t have the Service Manual from servicematers.com here it is also a link to one of many parts suppliers for the FAV6800A yours and my machine model and the FAV9800A the LCD console flavor of the machine. Check the Console of your machine for the Troubleshooting Guide….unplug the 120VAC power cord to the machine first. I only want you to see if that is in the Console for the wiring schematic. Remove the three # 15 Torx screws to open up the console back and check to see if troubleshooting guide is in the console. Should be if no repair service has worked on the machine and removed.

The Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

It’s good news that you can get into Service Mode and operate the lid locks. So we won’t condemn the Control Board just yet without further troubleshooting.

“”When I run throught the diagnostics I can get both sides to lock but only one side to unlock. It leads me to think that one side is defective and causing the machine to remain in lock mode?””

Yes that could be the issue….. Which Lid Lock will not unlock in Service Mode?

I hope it’s the Right Hand Lid Lock…..please identify which lid lock will not unlock. I would disconnect the R.H. Lid Lock and tape up the female connector going to it to help simplify the troubleshooting. The Left Hand Lid Lock is the important one with its dual signaling function to signal the Control Board that the Lid is closed (via magnetic reed switch in the Left Hand Lid Lock and lid magnet) and the Lid is Locked via a slide switch in both Lid Locks. Again only the Left Hand Lid lock is required for the machine to work as designed.

The Lid Locks are a push/pull solenoid/relay and receive momentary 120VAC pulse from the Control Board to operate one side of the solenoid to lock the lid. And a 120VAC pulse to the other side of the push/pull solenoid/relay from the Control Board to unlock the lid.

If the Control board is functioning 100% then the +12VDC signaling from the Lid Is Locked slide switch in Lid Lock (the run in parallel to the Control Board) is not making it up to Conn_3 pin 8 to signal the Control Board the “Lid Is Locked” I will attach a Pic of where you measure that on the Control Board. This forum has message length constraints.

So let’s make sure you are around and want to continue to try a DIY fix before I go any further……Rich

Do you have a DVM and do you want to troubleshoot at Control Board level?

This is the +12VDC you will measure with the Lid Lock locked and properly signaling from the Lid Locks to Conn_P3 pin 8 +12VDC. The Control Board will then turn on Locked LED.

If you don’t have +12VDC at this connector pin and the Locked Led is lit then you have a Control Board Failure.

If you do measure +12VDC and the Lid locks are not operated then we have a possible corrosion path issue in the Lid Locks false signaling. Try disconnecting both the Left and Right Lid Lock plugs from the machine and see if the Locked LED goes out. The Service manual will show you how to release the washer top from the base to get to the Lid Locks……See page 34 of the SM it shows the location of the Left Hand Lid Lock. It’s easier to remove the plug if you release the lid locks from there mounting position.......Rich

I have documented the Lid Left Hand Lid Lock for +12VDC signaling from and to the Control Board and 120VAC to the Push/Pull Lid Locks and Conn P_3 for +12VDC signaling in and out to the Lid Locks and the TDS sensor.

Left Hand Lid Lock, unplug the R.H Lid Lock to aid in troubleshooting.

Possible Corrosion issues in the Left Hand Lid Lock.

Try the "End of Cycle" button to the right of panel front, next to Start button.

If you have not already tried these,

1. Unplug the machine to see if the controls will free up

2. Check the drain system for any blockage or problems.

If you can get the machine into diagnostic mode you may be able to determine the problem. Here is the tech sheet.

http://www.servicematters.com/maytag...cs/8182208.pdf

If you cannot get the machine into test mode, a new control board is likely needed, but if you replace it you are doing it on speculation since that cannot be confirmed as the problem.

Maytag FAV6800 AWW transmission?

the noise is more than likely coming from the clutch as you correctly surmised that the transmission only functions the paddles. As far as the airplane sound during the spin cycle well that is a bearing issue also called the "spinner support". I would be very careful attempting to replace this part yourself as doing it wrong results in a very leaky washer. The clutch runs about $150 while the spinner support runs about $250 so even though the diagnosis of the tech was clearly wrong (transmissions are relatively cheap and are fairly easy to put into these machine) it still might not be worth the money. Maytag did extend warranties on clutches for very specific models but it only covered the part and not the labor so you may still wind up with an expensive bill. I hope this helped.

Maytag top load washing machine model PAV 2300 AWW. I've put in new springs but washing machine gets out of balance very easily. Have you got any suggestions?

If you have replaced the spring is the tub over to one side not in the center of the hole there is what they call a snumber ring on the bottom of the base the washer sets on that could be wore out but it is really hard to replace and you will need a special tool to compress the break

I need an instruction manual for Maytag topload washer Neptune TL

Get the Service Manual this will help you diagnose issues with this washer.  I found a Service repair manual on this site search for this; FAV6800 Manual.  Check the postings and you will find a URL to the manual.

From another member a step by step to dump water from machine in diag mode  ""One other thing I learned for those of you who don’t want to bail out the water in the tub. If you want to have the machine drain the excess water without bailing this should work. Turn the machine off and make sure the "locked door" light goes off. Then hold the "Spin" and "Enviro Plus" buttons at the same time for 3 seconds. "00" should then show up on the display. Then hit the "Delicate" button, then the “Pre-soak” button. This should activate the pump and get all the water out. Once the water is out hit the off button. You then may want to try the Spin cycle alone. These directions can be found on the Troubleshooting Manual found folded up behind the rear panel of the machine where the main electrical circuit board is located.""

Maytag 5500 AWW Turns off randomly shortly after starting

Check out the motor control board near the floor on the right side. These have a high failure rate on the Neptunes. Maytag redesigned both the motor and motor control board to be more reliable. While inspecting this board, you are looking for a blown 10 amp fuse and /or burnt electronic components. If you have either... then you will need the the new motor conversion kit which includes the new motor, new motor control board and the wire harness. What you describe are signs the motor control board is nearing its end of life...

The kit takes about an hour to install. See www.neptunewaxmotor.com for disassembly photos so you can inspect the motor control board.
