First thing to check is the screen (spark arrestor) on the muffler if it has one. When these get clogged units often will idle fine, but not be able to rev up much or at all.

If the screen is clogged, clean it and reinstall it, should work fine then.

Honda EM5000SX generator - will not idle up when a load is placed on. Will produce power but will not idle up.

from your description and what you do , the problem is in the auto control unit
it will be in the system to reduce the rpm to idle when there is no load ( auto mains on off controller switching between genset and mains supply)
by turning the auto operation off you are committing the gen set to full rpms regardless of the power requirement
you have the option of having it fixed at an gen set repair shop or leaving it off and starting the genset only when you have a mains power outage
check with an electrician to ensure that it is possible to run it that way as if the mains power unit is not correct , when you start it and you still have mains power , it will destroy the gen set

Saw starts runs good then when i start cutting it

Hi Jason:
Make and model might help but here's two ideas:
1) Remove muffler and clean it. They can get plugged up with carbon and the saw will run at low RPM but will quit because of excess back pressure when you try to rev it up.
2) Set the high and low speed carb settings. Start the saw then gradually increase engine speed until full throttle. Screw the hi-speed needle in slowly. If RPM immediately drops, back it out until Rpm increases, then starts to drop. Screw back in until peak rpm reached, then starts to drop. Back out to peak, then 1/3 turn more.
Set low speed so engine runs smoothly but chain does not turn.
Hope this helps.

Why doesn't it develop full rpm under load?

Hi Roger:
What kind of engine are we dealing with?
Maximum RPM is limited by the amount of load imposed on an engine. No load lets a 1 hp Briggs and Stratton scream at 6000 RPM when you bypass the governor, or your weedeater with no line sound like a ninja race bike. Add some load and they both slow way down.
So, reply as a comment to this post and we'll try to figure out what can be done for your circumstance.

Engine seem's to have a cut off at 3500 RPM

You will need to check the code that triggered the check engine light, To see if that will lead you to your problem.Auto zone will check your codes for free.

My Bosch jigsaw suddenly seems to run too slowly. It just doesn't cut as agressively as when new, and seems to turn less rpm. what's going on with it?

This may seem dumb but did you accidentely turn the variable speed dial on the trigger down? Not sure which model you have but that is the most common problem that comes into my shop with certain models.

Hi, my name is chris and i own a 460 rancher. just today the saw started to bog down when a load was added to it. seems to run at max rpm with no load however once touching the wood it will start to bog...

Hi Chris,
Check the air filter is clean and the choke plate is working ok.
Ensure the chain is sharp.
Check the chain isn't damaged and dragging in the guide bar.
A blocked muffler/silencer can cause loss of power.
Try screwing the "H" mixture adjustment screw in with the engine running at full power to reduce the richness of the mixture. Do this 1/4 turn at a time. Ensure you count the number of turns so you can get back to where you started.

The saw seems to be getting too much gas. with the filters off i can blow air in the carb and it does fine. i cleaned the needle valve and it does the same.

The carburetor could be set too rich for the unit to run properly. If you take it to a Stihl dealer they can tune the saw to the correct rpm. You can try to tune it to a "leaner" position. Look at the carburetor while it is on the unit and at Wide Open Throttle turn the H screw clockwise maybe half a turn and see if it will run at a higher rpm.
Alternatively you could re set the high side (Wide Open Throttle) by turning the screw until it seats (please turn the screw lightly as you could damage the seat) and turn it one full turn out. This is the factory setting and the unit should run O.K. at that position. If it still does not run correctly then there could be other issues with the carburetor that is making it not run very well.

My 2003 suburban seems to run at a higher rpm.

Hummm, 2000 rpm does not seem high, really. But another item to look at is your FAN. The clutch fan fails and drives the fan full engauge. Sounds like a jeep...massive sounding, relating to engine RPM, but not necessarily different.

I mentiont his because a trans does not typically fail and give a few hundred RPM. Usually a slipping sensation is described....

It starts and runs right for about five minutes, then it won't rev. to the highest rpm's. Will start after that but won't run fast enough to cut. It's a Poulan 3416----16" 34cc

Remove the muffler and clean out deposits from the spark arrestor screen. Make sure the intake air filter is clean. If these two items are good, then the 'H' carburetor adjustment may be too rich--turn clockwise somewhat until the engine runs at full speed, but 4-stroking slightly. The engine should smooth out and 2-stroke with even a light cutting load. Make sure the chain is being properly oiled while running. Hope this helps!

How do I do a basic tuning for a poulan pro 295? Just above the pull start are two access holes, one labeled "T", the other "L H". The saw is running pretty good, however I feel like it is not getting...

The `T` screw is your throttle control, the `L` & `H` is low and high speed. The normal procedure is to turn these two screws in full and then unscrew one full turn each. You start the saw and adjust the `L` screw gradually either way until it runs, do the same with the `H` screw while reving the engine. On some carbs. this can be tricky and needs a lot of patience, so if you are happy with the low speed only adjust the high speed. Hope this helps. Stephen.
