Flashing red light on ps3 after initial green followed by 2 beeps. Is it the infamous YLOD type issue, overheating, something hardware related ie Blu-ray player?

When i turn on ps3 green light comes on then blue light flashes then yellow light then flashing red light

Hello there Kevin

If you have the brief flashing yellow light, then its followed by a red blinking light then you have the yellow light of death AKA the YLOD.

The lights are a warning sign to let you know something is wrong. I can give you the quick explanation, There are 2 chips on the motherboard inside the PS3, the GPU (graphics) and the CPU (brain), when playing the ps3 the solder heats up and when you finish playing it cools down, over time this will cause the soldering to crack and the chips to lose connection with the motherboard and you get the YLOD.

WHERE TO GO FROM HERE

Option 1 - Call Sony

In warranty the Price is Free, out of warranty the Price is $150, the whole process is 4-6 weeks

You can call Sony and they will collect the PS3, repair/replace, and deliver the PS3 back to you

Option 2 - Fix it your Self

You can use a PS3 fix manual to get this fixed easily and at home using household tools you probably already own.

Click here to know more on PS3 Fix Manuals which has helped so many people like you.

Good luck

Best regards

Peter

Flashing green, yellow and red light

Does the lights blink red? If so, you have the infamous YLOD, aka. Yellow Light of Death. This is the number 1 cause of pS3's dying. It is an overheating issue linked to your CPU and GPU (the processor chips) You may need to find a local PS3 repair shop who can repair this. The process takes about 3 hours.

My playstation 3 console wont turn , when i try to it stops and a blue then yellow light flashes , what can i do to fix this.

source: http://www.edepot.com/playstation3.html#PS3_Model_Differences Yellow Light of DeathThe "Yellow Light of Death" or YLOD is the common phrase people use to describe the following sequence when they try to turn on their PS3:

  • Press Power Button
  • Red Light Flashes Three Times
  • Yellow Light Flashes
  • Green Light Flashes
  • Beeps Three Times
  • Red Light Flashes

The sequence above may vary a bit but you do see the flashing yellow light (sometimes shows up as orange) that normally you would not see when operating your PS3. The YLOD is a general hardware fault that can mean a lot of things. However, one of the problems is cracked solder that leads the PS3 to think one of its internal chips is not connected or is broken somehow. Cracked solder can happen when the chips get too hot (RSX most likely) and leads the motherboard to start bending, which may crack the solder. Changing the power supply (lower the average wattage going to the chips to lower the heat) and better thermal compound (heat dissipates faster to the heatsink) may prevent this error from occurring. However, if your PS3 has already had the YLOD, then you can reflow your motherboard every few months to keep it working (but it is not a permanent fix as the YLOD usually comes back).

My ps3 turns on and the light goes green then yellow then flashes red till i turn it off...what can i do?

what you got is what is know as yellow lite of death --YLOD

this is the site i got the info from...

and you are not the only one to experience this. more and more ps3 owners are getting hit with this problem. your best bet will be to send it off to sony if its under warrenty for they'll fix it for free. but be cautious of this for they may even replace your system and you may not get your original system back. if its not under warrenty you'll get hit with an $150 charge. you can check youtube for videos on how to open up/fix your ps3. look for videos "YLOD FIXES" i get people telling me that their system only works for few days to few month so i have to assume that the fix is not a permanent. last i checked i think sony only cover your system for 30 days if they fix it. there are also guides you can buy.

background

The YLOD is a major hardware failure for the PlayStation 3. The specific cause is somewhat known, but Sony has not commented about this failure whatsoever. Some theories for the cause include:

overheating (accelerated by dust build-up), blu-ray drive failure, bad power supply, and/or a hard drive critical error.

**UPDATE**

According to an eBay store that repairs YLOD PS3's, the hardware failure is caused by either/or of two things:

1. Hardware malfunction on the motherboard due to heating/cooling (solder physically cracking/breaking) which can be fixed by "reflowing", which is a fancy way of using a machine that has a super controlled (+ or - .5 degrees) hot air nozzle to re-melt the solder on the base of the defective chip to re-attach it.

2. The power supply has the failure in one of its capacitors or diodes. This can also be fixed by "reflowing" but it is harder to diagnose due to the need to chase down which one it is.

**According to this eBay store, this scenario is a much more difficult way to repair PS3's with the YLOD. They state they can only repair 8 out of 10 PS3's with the YLOD**

You know you have received the YLOD when the following occurs:

* You power on the console.
* The console starts up normally for about 2-3 seconds,
* The console beeps 3 times while flashing a faint yellow light,
* The console continues to flash a red light

Playstation 3 turns on than turns off with flashing red light

If it turns off randomly and blinks red and beeps, then it's an overheating problem.

If it turns off as soon as you turn it on and blinks red and beeps, then it's an overheating problem that is getting close to being a YloD.

If there is a yellow light mixed in with #2, then you have the Yellow Light of Death which kills your console. If this happens, repost on here saying you have the YLoD.

If the problem is #1 or 2, then leave the Ps3 off for a day and move it away from carpet and anything that makes heat. Also make sure it is atleast 4 inches away from EVERYTHING.

I cant start up my console

Your system has overheated. The thermal compound has heated and moved away from the CPU/GPU and the heat sync keep the heat from being dissipated via the heat sync. Eventually you will get the YLOD which is the equivalent of the Xbox 360 RROD. This is due to heat sysnc problems. Your CPU and GPU will more than likely need to be reflowed. I got the YLOD on my PS3 around the first of March 09. I also fixed my PS3 in about an hour. I have had no problems since. You can slow the YLOD but i dont believe it can be stopped. It seems it will eventually happen to all PS3's. One tip do not stand the PS3 on its side keep flat. This will help keep the thermal compound from moving as much when it heats up. Also i run a home based computer repair business in southern California. Feel free to email me at dwdpcrepair@gmail.com.
