18.5 briggs on poulan pro mower not charging new battery how do you test alternator unit ect only getting 12.5 volts once saw 13.3 but never again

U should get over 13v.your getting just batt volts.check for good grounds etc.

Why does my car not have any power after i boost it and drive it?


Bad battery and/or alternator. Once it is running, test voltage coming from alternator with a multimeter. Should be over 13 volts. If not, alternator may be bad. If alternator is sending over 13 volts, battery may be bad. Possible bad connection between alternator and battery, but not as common.

Blower motor slows down when i accelerate


I have a thought you may try testing your battery voltage with the car turned off .It should read 12 volts or higher if not charge battery than check again if battery is lower than 12 volts after charging replace battery.If 12 volts or higher start engine check voltage on battery again it should be 13 volts to 14.5 volts not higher if voltage readings are lower than 13 volts or higher than 14.5 volts replace alternator.

The battery does not charge, its a new battery.what do i look for?


if its a new battery it could be as simple as it wasn't charged when you purchased it, If it was charged and your mower isn't charging it, the power source to the battery from the mowers motor isn't working properly,, not knowing if its a 12 or 6 volt system you need to check the battery ,, see which one it is,, using a multimetter ( if its 12v ) check the battery after you charge it with an outside source ( battery charger) you would have a reading of 12-12.5 volts on a normal check,, then start the mower, and check the battery as its running,, you should get a reading of 13-13.5 volts minimum, if your not, the alternator or magneto isn't working properly, if you do show the increased voltage at the battery connections, then you need to clean the contacts since the charge isn't reaching the actual battery

Your mower is not charging the battery. Something is wrong with the charging system. It more than likely uses a magneto type charging system. It is mounted under the flywheel. Unless you are adept at repairing these take it to a pro.

Not charging battery


Hi Victor,
My name is Dane and I'm going to help you with this. I need you to do a couple of steps for me, and one involves using a voltmeter. You can pick up a cheap one at a hardware store or auto parts store. They will even show you how to use it if you need tem too. It will come in very handy around the house and well worth the $15.00 you will have to pay for it. Put your battery on a charger while you get the meter so it will be charged later. When the battery is charged, remove the charger.
I want you to set the meter up for Volts DC and (With the engine OFF) place the red lead on your battery positive terminal and black lead on the battery negative terminal. I want you to remember that number. If your battery is charged ok, it should be around 12 volts.
Now, I want you to start your tractor, and check the voltage again with the engine running. Do it the same way you did with the engine off. If you are getting around 13.5 - 15V, your mower is charging and you probably have a bad battery. Check your teminals and make sure they're clean and tight. If you got the same voltage with the engine on as you did with the engine off, make sure the connectors coming out from under the shroud of your engine are all connected. I've been doing this for a while now and I've never had a stator go bad yet. Not saying they won't, but it's very rare. To change the stator which is actually like a car alternator, you have to remove the top cover of your engine and pull the flywheel off. If you come back and tell me the stator's bad, I'll tell you how to do it. But for now, I think you'll have enough information to get back running again.
Just a note. Those stores which use the resistance type battery testers. The ones that Glow red when they test your battery.. They can't really properly test your battery unless your battery is fully charged to begin with. Amazing how much money they make on that little "FREE" test.

First things first, we need to know if there is enough power. Check the battery with a multi-meter, it should read at least 12v. If you don't have a multi meter then either put the battery on charge or replace it. The logic behind this is a mower needs a certain amount of charge to run and that charge needs to be stored somewhere. Cleaning the terminals on the battery and where it connects to the starter is also a good idea. If this gets the mower started, then while its running you should check the battery again. The volts should read around 13-14v. If it is not, then the real problem is your alternator. But in most cases it comes back to bad battery, battery leads or bad connections of the leads to the battery, starter, or chasy. Good luck, Dusty.

Poulan Pro 18 inch saw. Once the unit is warm it


start saw when cold and work it hard. if it stalls or quits remove spark plug and hook the plug wire to the plug and ground to the cyl head have switch on and pull the start rop briskly a few times or use a test plug. if there is no spark disconnect ign switch from from the ign wires and pull rope a few more times.spark?= replace ign switch,no spark until engine is cool,replace coil.

Wont keep a charge


Hi,

You should be able to get over 12 volts from the charging system of the lawnmower. I would think once it is running, you should get 12.8 to just over 13 volts dc to adequately charge your battery. If you have less then 12 v power output from your chargiing system, well then the charging system is not working properly.

Of course, if the battery is defective and wont hold a charge, you can test that be taking the battery out of the machine and checking the voltage. It should be 12 volts or slightly better. If you let it sit overnight and it drops substantially, well it is likely not holding a charge and draining internally. If it does not have 12 volts to begin with and your charging system is ok, well then it is likely defective.

Also, you can use the glass hydrometer made for batteries to draw up some fluiid and check against the colour scale.

Each cell on a battery is 2 volts, so 2 volts times 6 cells is 12 volts. So if one cell is bad, then they all become bad as the battery needs a total of 12 volts to operate.

Some gargages will test your battery for free if you buy the new battery from them.

clean battery terminals ,bring battery to be tested after charging, after reinstalling battery run car and test alternator output it should be a minimum of 13-14volts if it is under 13 replace alternator , use a voltmeter set on 12 volt 10 amp dc to check the wire to check is located on the back of the alternator covered with a rubber grommet of course hold negative wirw on volt meter to ground and touch red wire to big terminal on back of alternator while car is running should have 14 volts or at least 13 volts
