Question about Amana Refrigerators

2 Answers

Amana Bottom Freeze unit - BR22T. The freezer portion of my unit stopped freezing a few days ago but is still cold ( about as cold as a fridge on 3/4 setting. The top unit has been working fine but now is not keeping its cold, i.e milk starts to spoil before its expiration date. I have both sections at 6/7 setting. I pulled out the unit and vacuumed the coils as well as removed the back panels and vacuumed around the fan and coils on the back. I noticed some corrosion on the back copper lines, but no signs of leaking. As far as I can tell the fan and the condenser unit seem to be operating, as the unit cycles on and off. About to call for repair but wanted to get an idea of what to expect. My fridge is about 10 years old. Nowadays would it make sense to repair or just buy a new fridge. Thanks for any advice.

Hi, you check to see if the fan is working and for ice on the back wall (for defrost problem). Then you most likely are low on freon or you have a bad compressor. Check to see if the compressor is running (IF scorching hot its bad too) . Next check to see if the coils under the unit are hot. They should be so hot you cant hold onto them. Just touch for a second. If they are just warm, then you are low in freon.

Take care

Thanks for the information. Is replacing freon an expensive process? I'm about to buy a new fridge if so. thanks.

Hi! 10years of service is quite good. Repair will surely cost you, buying a new one is better plus refrigerators today are efficient specially when it comes to electric bills. Maybe its time for an upgrade. Hope this helps and have a good one!

Refrigerator side too cold

refrigerators only have one cooling system and that is for the freezer. The fridge part is cooled by sending a portion of the air from the freezer to the fridge. your fridge thermostat controls a fan that turns on and off as needed. first step is to make sure this is working, and not stuck on. turn your fridge to a somewhat warm no and open the door for a few minutes to allow the cold air out then check and see see if it gets very cold again within say an hour. if it does your fan is always on and you need to repair it. if that is working then you have to play with both freezer and fridge settings. best thing is to get a cheap thermometer and check your freezer temp. it should be around 0 to -5f if it is colder than that frigid air blowing into your fridge too cool the whole area will freeze anything close to the vent. once you have your freezer set then start adjusting your fridge. personally I have mine set at 34f knowing that some things on the top shelf will freeze. but I like my cola's COLD. so I put things like butter that are harder to freeze at that level. but if you don't want anything to freeze then a temp of 37 -39f is correct for your fridge. so it comes down to freezer temp, the amount of time the fan is on, and proximity to the vent. good luck

Amana fridge is not cold

Its defrost problem, the freezer should cool, then freeze, then defrost cycle should start. In your case freezer is cooling, then freezing, but its not defrosting. That's why fridge section is not cooling.-------

Freezer works, fridge doesn't cool

Probably excessive ice in the condensor. Likely defrost thermostat or defrost heater problem.

What happens is excessive ice keeps airflow from the refrigerator part of the unit.

Freezing problem

I think you mean that milk freezes, etc.

Probably bad thermocouple. In the refrigerators I'm familiar with, there is a thermocouple thermostat in the freezer. There is no measuring of refrigerator temperature; it just gets a portion of the cold freezer air.

If the thermostat is bad, then ice cream should be rock hard too, for it never quits cooling except on defrost cycle, three times per day.
