Question about Craftsman 20 Hp 42" Deck Lawn Tractor

2 Answers

My Craftsman 15 HP Lawn tractor is spewing white smoke. When I removed the air filter, I noticed there was oil all over the inside of the air filter and at the bottom of the air filter. When I run the tractor without the air filter covered I see oil being spewed up through the hot air vent into the carb. What could be causing this?

Oil level is fine, the mower runs only on a flat lawn. When I hand try to turn the top of the engines crank case I get resistence and could feel the engine pull in air. Could it be a worn head gasket or a faluty crankcase breather?

On ours ,it was a bad valve seal on the intake valve. If you have a way to air-lock the cylinder, (so the valve doesn`t drop), you can make this repair without removing the head.

I could be caused by a couple things, the most common is overfilling with oil, running on too great of angle and flooding the valve stem area or really bad valve stem seals.

It sounds like you are getting a lot of crank venting, take the mower to a dealer and have the compression checked, you may have some failed internal parts that are repairable if you don't run it too much more.

Lawnmower is spewing white smoke

white smoke means that there is water in the fuel air mixture during combustion. a bluish white smoke means oil is being burned during combustion. take another look and make sure which one it is. since all mowers ive seen are air cooled the only way water can be getting in the fuel air mixture is through the gas cap. check your gas tank and gas can for water. may be best to empty both and start over with fresh fuel

17.5 h.p. b/s craftsman tractor oil pushes into carb. smokes bad!

Make sure it's not overfilled with oil.
if this is not the case, then you have excessive blowby, which is what blows past your rings when the air/fuel mixture ignites. there is only one explanation for this, faulty rings, and that's what it sounds like to me. the blowby forces the oil into the vent leading to the filter, and back into the cylinder, where it burns, creating blue smoke.
