Question about Briggs & Stratton Garden

Open Question

I have a Ransomes T1600 ride on lawnmower with a Vanguard Briggs & Stratton 16HP Vtin OHV engine. The starter fails to turn over on some occassions . Makes no difference if the engine is hot or cold . Shorting across the solenoid gets movement on the motor. Is it likely to be a starter problem? I have no trailer so difficult to get to my local dealer. Want to try to exhaust possibilities first.

Will not start. but if I pour gas in carburetor it will. stop after the gas is burn of carburetor

Could be that the needle is stuck in carb, or else the fuel pump diaphragm is bad. Check the pump, thats what I would check first.

Head bolt torque for 16hp horizonal shaft engine

Anywhere from 35 lbs to 220 lbs, depending on the series of your engine. For your engine, the head bolt torque should be 190 lbs.

But I've attached a chart for you to utilize to make sure of your exact engine model series, just in case there was a transposed number, etc.

http://www.small-engines.com/torque.html

Here's the official Briggs & Stratton chart for all versions of their engines, which confirms the 190 lbs torque spec.
