When I download a program an click to install it a box pops up saying the download I am trying to install is not a valid Win32 application. This is a new problem. I have not had any problems downloading in...

This error message could be caused by a number of things. Generally it's because the program being downloaded is corrupt or didn't download completely. Have you tried a different browser to do the downloads? If it's a very large download you may encounter problems with losing packets. A download manager may help.
http://www.techspot.com/downloads/231-free-download-manager.html

Also, you may want to try doing a restore to system restore point to a date when you weren't having this issue. System Checkpoint dates (in bold) are usually very safe points to restore to. I would also recommend a virus scan and if you don't have this utility and are able to download and install it (yes I know that's your current problem, but you can download it to a flashdrive from a friend's comp and install it), I'd get Glarysoft Utilities and run the one-click maintenance which will fix any registry errors. It's free and is a great way to keep your machine running well.

If any of this helps correct your problem I would appreciate a rating. People here seem to take the help and don't show any appreciation by taking the time to rate the help.

When I open Dell 24000 I get an error sign primary drive 0 not found It tells me to hit f2-- but when I do I get no response. A colleague told me it was a loose cable so i have opened the tower but I do...

the hard drive IDE cables are flat, ribbon cables, usually grey and about 3 inches wide. do not confuse this with the floppy drive cable, which will look identical, except that it is 2 inches wide.

the cable could be loose on either the motherboard IDE controller end or the hard drive end, so wiggle it in tighter, or unplug and then re-plug it at both ends, and then try to boot. if that does not work, then replace the cable.

if a new cable does not fix it, then the hard drive itself may have failed. install the hard drive in a DIFFERENT working computer as a secondary (slave drive) by installing it to the middle connector of the IDE cable (IDE cables have a connector for the "master" or only drive at the end, and a plug for a "slave" drive in the middle of the cable), and see if you can access it. it will probably show up as the "E" drive under "computer" or "my computer". if it does not show up, check and see if it shows up under "administrative tools>computer management>disk management". if the drive is not showing up, then it is dead. if the drive works in the second computer, then the IDE CONTROLLER is the culprit.

if the motherboard's integrated IDE controller is dead, you may want to try the OTHER IDE controller socket. most computers from that era have 2 IDE controller sockets, and usually attach the hard drive(s) to one, and the cd/dvd rom(s) to the other. since the hard drive cables have plugs for 2 devices, you can attach both the hard drive and a single cd/dvd drive to the 2nd ide controller socket, in cases where the 1st ide controller soocet no longer works. attach the hard drive to the end of the IDE cable, and the cd/dvd drive to the middle of the IDE cable, as the "master" or boot device should always be attached to the end of the IDE cable.

you can also purchase an add-in, pci card ATA/IDE controller card, and use this instead of the motherboard's integrated IDE controller sockets.

Hello,
If IDE drives are hooked to the same controller one must be configured in BIOS as Master, and the second as slave.
If there is only one drive, it should be set as master: Two drives on two different controller must be both defined as master.

Hope it helps.

ASUS P5QC does not detect any devices... I have a HD and a DVD hooked up. The jumpers are set to normal but they are connected to the MB with one cable. Does it need to be a master slave setup?

Yes, since you are using two IDE drives on One flat ribbon cable, you need to set the harddrive as a Master drive, and the optical, (DVD), drive as a Slave drive.

When two IDE drives are installed on one cable, BIOS needs a way to find the drive that has the O/S, (Operating System), then the optical drive.

Would recommend you buy a SATA optical drive, as soon as you can afford it. SATA DVD burners aren't that expensive.
Your motherboard is set up for SATA, and SATA is WAY faster than IDE. (IDE is also referred to as EIDE, ATA, and PATA)

Then of course a SATA harddrive, and a fresh genuine copy of Windows in the future.
SATA doesn't care where you plug in a drive, and doesn't care which drive connects to what SATA header. It will find that drive. You can connect any SATA drive, to ANY SATA header on the motherboard.

Having two IDE drives such as an IDE harddrive, and an IDE optical drive on the same cable, S-L-O-W-S your computer down! BIOS has to look to see which drive has the O/S first, then it will look for the optical drive.

Thought I would include two links that tell you, and show you how to set jumpers on the jumper pins, on an IDE harddrive, and IDE optical drive,

2.Optical drive:

Hi Banyar, lets check the main menu & the boot order in you're bios. Start up the PC, as soon as you see any display on the monitor press the delete key every 2 seconds until the bios main menu loads. This is also where you can see the time & date. List on the left is;
Primary IDE Master
Primary IDE Slave
Secondary IDE Master
Secondary IDE Slave

Across from these on the right is the matching device. If you have one hard drive the bios will show its model number on the right.
Ex: ST150322A. (You're drive will be different). If you have more than one hard drive the second drive, (Should be listed as Primary IDE Slave). CD-ROM drives would be listed as, Secondary IDE Master & Secondary IDE Slave. Write down the model name of the Primary IDE Master on paper. Now go to the title, "Boot" in the bios. Use you're manual & go to page 2-25. High-light, Boot Device Priority & press enter. Set the order as shown in the manual. Make sure the 3rd boot device is set to the correct hard drive listed from the main menu. The model you wrote down. Once set save & exit the bios. The PC will restart. You should no longer receive the error message & windows should boot normally. If windows does not load normally than it is possible that the Primary IDE master drive is not the drive with windows installed on it. You must find the correct drive with windows loaded on it. Connect that drive to the Primary IDE master port.
You may need to reset the drive’s pin settings so it is seen as the primary drive.
Than change the 3rd device in the bios boot priority list with the correct drive. Windows demands that the operating system be located on the, Primary IDE master port. Please read pages 2-12 & the top of 2-13 in you're manual.

Good Luck!
