Get a tester and check the continuity of the wires on both ends of the plug...the 3rd wire is usually connected to ground but it's optional..it doesn't pose any danger to your system...

It is possible that it could be a bad solder joint. It could also be that the connector is a different one. Some laptops use a dual voltage power structure. On the Inspiron E1505 (same as the 6400) I have it requires the dual voltage power. This is where the outside of the plug is the ground and the inside of the plug is one voltage and the center pin is yet another voltage. In this case, (if I remember correctly) the inside of the plug is like 19.5 volts and the center pin is like 9 volts. The inside of the plug supplies the power to the laptop and charging circuit and the center pin tells the laptop that the power adapter is plugged in and should start charging. If the laptop recognizes the Vostro power supply then this is a good possibility. Either way, it is worth getting it checked out. The last thing you want to do is burn out the charge circuit on the motherboard by having the incorrect power supply plugged in to it. It may work for a while or it may work forever but you never know.

My Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop battery isn't charging, I think :(

Debby
Try booting without the battery installed. You probably will have no change but this eliminates the battery as a source of the problem. If it doesn't boot and you are sure that the external power supply is ok, you probably have a bad motherboard. At that point, the unit needs to be checked out by a pro or a really competent amateur.

DELL INSPIRON 6400 WILL TURN ON BUT WONT CHARGE

I would try checking the power supply first before replacing the battery. The power supply is much cheaper and sometimes interchangabel with other models. Also try cleaning and reseating it. If you do end up needing a battery though dont buy it from dell. get it on ebay, amazon or a decent priced online store for best prices. If you're lucky you could get another one for about $20 or $30. good luck

DELL LAPTOP INSPIRON 6400 MY LAPTOP BATTERY IS SHOWING STATUS ( UNKNOWN ) ON WINDOWS & ON BIOS IT SAYSS BATTERY NOT INSTALLED

Here are my recommendations for this issue:

1. Reseat the battery.
2. Remove All External Components
3. Check the battery connectors on the battery and the system. Examine the connector on the battery and the system. Make sure that there is no physical damage and that it is clear of debris.
4. Remove All External Components
5. Try a known-good battery in the system, if available.
