It seems that your RAM of the computer is being pampared. Just reinsert the ram and this might solve your problem. But amake sure that it is inserted properly and unforcefully.

That means there is s problem with the RAM on the motherboard (Problem lies with the Memory Chip). This could be a result of a Memory chip that has not been inserted properly or it has moved away from its contacts on the motherboard. This will be fixed by opening up the RAM compartment and remove the memory chips and replace them back carefully. Try to switch on your laptop again. Make sure that when you are doing all this, the computer is off and the charger is not connected to it. This I hope will solve your problem.

I just had the same thing happen to me. Is there a fix for this?

One long beep and 2 short beeps

Depending upon your BIOS manufacturer, generally this POST error code means either a video card problem or a motherboard problem. If the RAM is OK then you have a motherboard problem, and this may not be cost effective to fix. Consider putting your money towards a new laptop, remove the hard disk and put it into an external USB adapter case and use it as an USB hard drive for backup etc.

Problem with ibm thinkpad r40

The IBM beep code error 1 long 2 short beeps means there is a video card fault. Reseat your RAM because the video card uses some of the RAM. If it doesn't work then the video chip on the motherboard is faulty, the only way to fix is to replace the motherboard - this may not be a cost effective solution.
Connecting an external monitor to the laptop won't work because the video card also sends data to the video port.

If you feel comfortable reseat any cards in the pc. Also unplug and reseat the ram. Make sure the power is disconnected from the Plug in the back and you discharge yourself by touching the metal on the case.

Concentrate on reseating the video card as the 2 beep codes is usually the Video card
