What is a tsunami and how it forms.

Hello Anonymous,
What a question! I hope you're in no danger from a tsunami because that's definitely something you don't want to tangle with. Tsunamis are caused (usually) by an underwater earthquake, eruption or some other anomaly. They in turn create waves that are truly killers. Remember the tsunami of several years ago? Scores of people vanished and were never heard from again. A word of caution, however. If you do find yourself in a tsunami, go inland immediately, and please bear this in mind; if you think the first wave is bad, subsequent waves are even worse. You're better off on land than on the ocean during a tsunami. Tsunami waves can travel very fast, upwards of 300-400 miles per hour so you can't outrun them. Hope this answered your question.

When do tsunamis happen

Tsunamis happen when there is an underwater earthquake, causing the ocean floor to move violently up or down. When the ocean floor moves like that, the water above it has to go somewhere so it spreads out in a very fast wave. The wave is a tsunamis.

How is a tsunami formed

It doesn't. In deep water a tsunami isn't even a big wave. A boat can go right over one without even noticing it. The problem is when the tsunami hits shallow water.

Unlike normal waves which are only on the surface, a tsunami goes all the way to the bottom. So what happens when a miles (or kilometers) high wall of water hits the shallower seabed near a shore? It piles up. Not miles high, of course, since the water crumbles, but still rather high. And with the forward momentum it just keeps piling up and driving forward.

The speed of tsunami is 600 m/hr.Then the distance is 2000 m along the shore and the time is 10.What is the time that the tsunami arrived?

This sounds like a trick to start with so, if that is the case the Tsunami arrived at 10:00. But if you are looking for a start time that the Tsunami first hit the shore line (if the shore is parallel to the movement) ? Divide 2000 by 600. which equals 3.33 or converted into hours/ minutes is, 03:19:80 hours which is how long it took the Tsunami to move the 2000m or almost 1/3 rd the distance every hour. Subtract 3.33 hours from 10:00 which equals 6.67 you have to now convert the .67 tenths into minutes which equals .67 tenths of an hour or 67% of 60 as in minutes. So now we multiply .67 times 60 which equals 40.2 So the time arrival would be 06:40:20 minutes. Hope this helps FixYa up.
