You dont say whether the drive indicates that it b=needs a jumper to be a primary or even a slave. The need is usually on the drive itself in a picture. This shows how it should look as a oriumary or slave drive. Follow the guiide written on your drive.'

If you don't put jumper in harddrive is detects it as cable select means if you connect your harddrive to middle socket of ide cable and then it detects it as slave but if you connect it at the end of ide cable it detects as slave. But make sure that otehr device is not set as master only 1 device is set as master or slave .
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Jumpers are metal pins that have small black plastic sleeves that slide over the top of them, they are used to configure certain devices, including hard drives.
what happen if i dont put jumper in a hard a hard - d0db545.jpg
A jumper is used to determine Master and Slave on HDD.Hope your IDE cable has a lable.
d6e8ba1.jpg The far end connector is for master and the middle connector is for slave. If you only have one hard disk, select master and for two drives, new drive will be the main drive, set the jumper to master, if you want it as a secondary drive then set it to slave. Alternatively, you could use a separate IDE cable on the motherboard's secondary IDE interface. When you reboot your machine the bios should automatically detect the new hard drive.
Therefore if you don't put jumper in a hard drive, neither master nor slave will be determined.

I have 2 Hitachi 3 TB External USB Drive External Hard Disks that are not recognized by my Mac OS X 10.6.8. Have I bought the wrong ones?

have you formated your hard drives? are your black or white jumpers hooked to the pins on top of hard drive? if the hard drives are new chances are the jumpers are still in small plastic package.the jumpers are little peaces of plastic with two holes with metal in them. the jumpers go on were it says master if you are using 2 hard drives .the other hard drive the jumper goes were it says slave. if you are using 1 hard drive you put the jumper on cs.

My hard disk capacity is 80GB. It is seagate barracuda 7200.9, it is showing 32 gb instead of 80gb. I dont know how to fix this, but reading some experts answers i came to conclusion that this is a jumper...

Indeed. The problem is that you put the jumper and it limited the capacity of the hard drive to 32 gb.

Here is a picture that will help you put the jumper in the exact place:

Problem putting a 30 gig quantum lct 15 3.5"series as a slave

Did you switch the jumper config back to Master or CableSelect before trying to install them as a single drive? Also check the Maxtor website, (they owned Quantum too), for the correct jumper settings. Some of these drives (like the Quantum Fireball lct series) need TWO jumpers not just one. That was the trick that fixed mine from not being recognized by the Bios or the Windows setup disk....I got it used with only a single jumper, but it needed two to put it Cable Select mode.

Master jumper position for Conner,CFS541R hard drive.

Isn't that shown on the hard disk ? Even old hard disks have some details about the jumpers on them.

Anyway, yes, it is master if it's the ony drive. Depending on the drive, it may or may not need the jumper for the master or single drive. No harm if you try connecting the drive without a jumper.

The most that will hapen is that the drive won't be recognized or at most, the pc won't boot. If that happens, try with the jumper. It won't harm either the computer or the disk.

No cd included with hard drive, how do i install?

normally you dont need any software to install the HD if its a newer computer (last couple of years) just check your jumper settings, it should show you on the HD where to put the jumper for master / slave.

If your putting it in as a second HD for more space you will want to put the jumper on the back of the drive to "slave" and attach it to the same cable as the hard drive in your computer already.

Wanting to use as slave hard drive

hi ronrayhall,

I installed a maxtor hard drive, and they are shipped with a default of cable select. If you have this hard drive you dont need to change the jumpers. You do need to make sure however your original hard drive is also on cable select.

If you dont have a maxtor, alot of manuf. print the jumper settings on the hard drive, if not you might have to find the install instructions on the web for that drive. There is a good listing of Jumper settings at this website if its easier for you than searching the web.

How to set hard drive jumpers

a common hard drive jumper setting if its an ide sata, when you look behind the hard drive, you can see there are 4 places where you can set the jumpers...

there is cable select which you dont havce to put any jumpers at all. there is slave to which you may put 1 jumper there. and there is also master which sometimes is a single drive. any indication should be seen there above the jumpers which is indicated as MA- master, SL- slave CS - cable select.

hope this helps you in some way.
