Question about Dell Dimension 2400 PC Desktop

From all the help I have got(and thank you) and nothing has worked, I think I might have some malware, even though nothing but the sound is misfunctioning. What do you think? A format might be the only solution.??

Windows XP media addition, Dell Dimension E520. I have no sound after downloading drivers suggested by Driver Guinese software.Everything fine before that. I have tried everything suggested to me including the original CD driver download but it says "The hardware was not installed because the wizard can not find the necessary software".
    Help please

  • murpeg Jun 02, 2010

Yes you did respond (thank you) with suggestions and I think the best one is to format.
Why do I think it is malware now, well because all the things I have tried seem to get blocked near the end of the "upgrade drivers" or "restore drivers" or "roll back drivers" or trying to reinstall original drivers from the CD that came with the computer.Comments?

I agree and thank you for sticking in there with me. Do you know of a site that I can donwload good instructions of how to do a full format for this Dell Dimension E520. I know you start with control key down and tap F11 in start up, but what after that?

  • murpeg Jun 02, 2010

I have been throught this before and it is partitioned at F11. So is there a site I can go to for good instructions to guide me through the format? Any help is appreciated.

1. Ask a friend to download & burn avira_rescue_sys to a CD. 2. Boot your system using the CD. To select CD as the boot media, press F8 or F11 or ESC on most systems. Find out which key your motherboard uses for the boot menu. 3. Once booted, scan your drive(s) with Avira.
* note: This could be destructive. If any of your system files are infected and Avira deletes the infected file, your system may not boot. As an insurance, you may want to create an image backup of your OS partition. Google disk snapshot to find a tiny German program which does a superb job of creating disk images. If all else fails, you can always format.

So, are you having a sound issue or a virus infection issue? What made you think it might be malware?

  • coz Jun 02, 2010

I am not sure if you can conclude it to be a virus infection. You really should run a scan before deciding that. If you do decide formatting is the cleanest solution, make sure you download all the drivers on a cd or usb first. Most important is the network adapter driver, since with it working, you can get all the other drivers. Without it, you have to use another PC to download & copy.

Also, I have never been a fan of those driver sites. I use them from time to time, but I prefer to go to the manufacturer sites.

    Good luck.

Re booting into Dell service partition, it depends first on whether you still have that partition intact.

On some PCs, you press the boot selection key (F11, but not always), then if service partition is an option, select that. After that, you look for the choice that reinstalls the factory image.

On other brands, you boot into Windows boot menu (this is always F8) and one of the choices is to repair using factory tools.

It all depends on how the manufacturer has it set up and I've had my fingers on too many brands to remember how each does it. Dell, as far as I can recall, uses a service partition selected at SYSTEM boot, not WINDOWS boot.

  • coz Jun 02, 2010

Ok. If you've done this before, you should also know that the process is automated. You do not select partitions. It will simply use all of the disk minus the service partition. There is nothing you can do (within the Dell recovery routine) which will make things worse than it is now, so I really wouldn't worry about making the right choices.

Also, this is the best approach because you don't have to worry about Windows license key. The Dell image has their oem license key pre-installed. The install routine will confirm Dell bios, then everything else is automated. Give it 15 min, then when it reboots, you will have some basic configurations to do. You should download the most current drivers for your model before starting this process.

Well let's do it like this, please uninstall the driver, if possible also run a registry cleaning. Restore you system to the previous state (suppose if your problem starts today, then restore the 30th of May 2010). I hope you can do this.. here's the hint... Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore - Restore my System to earlier time (select the date from the left pane by clicking the corresponding date), - Next, (Note that your system will automatically restart).
After that, download the drivers from here and install it... Sigmatel Audio Driver Your audio device should be Sigmatel. If you still have problem, let me know. Good luck Thanks for using FixYa.

My Battlefield 1942 running on Windows 7 has suddenly quit booting up. Uninstalled it and re-installed it. Same problem. It worked fine until now

My advice isn't expert...

I suggest you scan for viruses and malware first. If nothing is found it could either be a software conflict or the programme has cannibalised parts of windows and/or replaced them with none-windows versions and made it unstable.

You could try System Restore but that has never worked for me. I usually end up formatting the drive and reloading everything.

Putting the system disc in the drive and booting from the disc I think offers a repair solution and it might be worth trying that.

I have used XP for years and I now have a laptop with a respectable specification running Windows 7. I find it slow and temperamental by comparison even though I have reloaded it twice.
The supplied serial doesn't work even though it is an official disc and I sometimes think Microsoft is somehow attacking my computer...

Sounds like you could have some infections. Try downloading Malware bytes, and Combo Fix. These programs should help you to see if you need to clean up your PC. If you have windows 8.1 and can't use combo fix get C Cleaner. Just google these names and they will lead you to where you can download them. Use malware bytes before you use either of the other two.

Mine works when plugged in, but dead when not plugged. Found fuse, subtly hidden in lower part of AC power receptacle; pried out with small screw driver. Looked good & passed ohmmeter check. I loved the beast when it functioned. It spent a year in the garage; it didn't work when I brought it in. Charge light on for 8 seconds after plugging in, then off.

Welcome to Fixya

First thing you need to check is if there are virus running on the system. Viruses can slow down your computer especially if they execute automatically the moment you turn ON the computer. Click this link and download and install the anti malware/spyware software.

I think my net book have a virus

Go to and install one of the free anti-viruses. It would also be worth downloading anti anti-malware product as well.

I recommend Avast Free Anti-virus and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (both are free).

RE: laptop keeps asking if I want to compact express files

Hi there. Sounds like it could be a malware virus that gives you false alerts. It tricks us into running a program that we think will help, when in fact, in won't.

If you have Windows Defender, download it from Microsoft if you don't, boot up your system in Safe Mode. Then open Defender and run a full scan. See what this turns up.

Let me know if this does/doesn't find anyhting.

If you need me to clarify or run through anything, just post a comment, and I'll be happy to help

I once downloaded Flip Words from a favorite and reliable game site called MiniClip, and it was infected with malware. I suggest you get Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware software, upgrade it, and use it to scan your computer. You can download it here, straight from the manufacturer:

I used it to fix my vundo infection when nothing else worked or even caught it. Even if this doesn't fix your problem, it's handy to have and works better than any free anti-malware program I've ever used.
