The user account may be limited account. if you are able to open them through administrator account then go to your administrator account and then go to control panel. in control panel you will see user account. open it and click on user accoun and make it as administrator. then you will be able to open the files in hte user account

You can help (before you buy from Microsoft) with LibreOffice. It is free like OpenOffice.org and come to linux world when Oracle start create problem after buying Sun. You have windows version for lot of languages. Its file system is just zip with XML inside (if you need to hack it inside). Microsoft is create new file system (docx, xlsx...) which is copy of that ideas. But it is not free from patents, like OpenOffice or LibreOffice formats.

Tip

Compatibility Pack for MS Office, doc to docx, ppt to pptx, xls to xlsx

This tip is all about the compatibility issues between the Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003 with Office 2007. Because all programs in Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003 used the old file extensions for its different programs. For example Word 2000 saved files with extension .doc, Excel 2000 with .xls and PowerPoint 2000 with .ppt. but on the other Office 2007 used the new file extensions for its different programs. For example Word 2007 saved files with extension .docx, Excel 2007 with .xlsx and PowerPoint 2007 with .pptx. Now the problem is that when you will try to open Office 2007 files into Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003 you will not open the file due to compatibility issues between both office versions (before 2007 and after 2007). Microsoft provides a free compatibility pack to convert Office 2007 documents to the Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003 format. There are many third party free converter are available but here we are using Microsoft office compatibility pack.

Please follow the given link to download free Microsoft compatibility pack -

Just install the compatibility pack after downloading........

I cannot open .docx and xlsx files.

The files extensions you have listed, .docx and .xlsx, are files that have been created using the Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010 suite of programs. Specifically .docx is a Microsoft Word document, and .xlsx is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. You will have to have either of the Microsoft Office programs mentioned, or you can also use the Open Office suite of programs. This is a free program that you can download at the following website:

I cannot open .docx files and .xlsx files. Thanks in advance for your help. Laszlo

If you have downloaded docx or xlsx files on your desktop computer you can open them with Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010 suite (docx - by Word 2007 and xlsx - by Excel 2007 programs).
If you use and older Microsoft Office version (Office XP or Office 2003), download and install the compatibility pack: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en
Alternatively install the latest OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice.org (totally free).

In my PC Office 2003 is installed. Now sometimes I received Word & Excell 2007 files which is not opening in my PC. Can you tell me without installing Office 2007 how can I convert those docx and xlsx...

You don't have to convert the .docX or .xlsX to view in MS Office 2003, just install the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats" and you should be able to open files, created or saved as the MS Office 2007 format.

If you need to edit the files you can too, but you will saved it in the MS Office 2003 formats.

Hope it helps.

I am trying to copy an invoice that is emailed to me weekly. When I try to save it to my files it looks nothing like their copy. What should I do?

Hi,

It depends on what type of file they have sent to you and what program you are opening it up with.

For example, if they have sent you a file that was created in Microsoft Office 2007 (files will end in xlsx for excel or docx for Word), you need to open up in that version of Office or have a compatibility pack installed. Alternatively, you can ask the sender to save the file as an 97-2003 document and resend it to you.

Hope that helps

What is the meaning of X in the word DOCX?

The X stands for XML (Extensible Markup Language), which is the programming language behind the scenes in Office 2007 programs.
Previous versions of Word were based on binary data. Binary data is, by nature, prone to corruption, and "bloated."
By changing the background code, Microsoft was able to create new tools and features in Word 2007 that would not have been possible otherwise.
