If you are switching from Vista to Win 7 then you will have to upgrade the PC. All OS' when installed look for an older version of the OS. On finding one they give you an option of Upgrading or New Install. Upgrading means that the data would be safe while New inst means you lose data unless you change the folder of the new installation. And in any case do backup all your data before commencing the installation.

The actual installation is done just like vista ..but will not be installed from windows like an upgrade..but only from boot-able disk ..fo rthat you will probably need to go to bios and change the boot sequence and set cd/dvd like the first boot device ..than save with F10 ..and restart ..with the dvd in ..and when it asks to press any key to boot from dvd do it ...just press a key ..This will confirm the intention and the installation will start ..It is pretty much automatically but for a few selection at the start ...choose partition...formatting and such ..after that most of them will install automatically ..
After finish ..go to device manager and see what drivers wasn't installed ..(mostly will install auto..but lan card if it is a pci one ...and video card ..
to be able to install it ..you need at least 1G ram memory ..a dvd drive ..and 15 G free on a partition ...of choice ..(you can actual install it in dual boot sequence ..and leave the xp or vista intact in another partition ...and on start you will be able to choose between operation systems ..

Go into your bios settings set the cd rom as first boot device save and exit. Computer will reboot place the new windows disk into your cd player if you are on time it will catch the new disk and tell you that thee is a bootable disk in th cd rom, do you wish to boot this disk. If you miss it just place the cd into the disk player and reboot the system again. Once you have selected yes for the cd rom follow the prompts on the cd and you will be on your way to even more frustration with windows. Hope this helps.

File header checksum does not match computed one. ???

You have one or more critical corrupted file/s which prevents the laptop from booting up.
To get the laptop operating again, you need to insert the Windows Vista CD and do a Repair and if this fails you need to install Vista again.
