Question about RTO Atwood DSI-RV Water Heater-6 Gallon

1 Answer

My 6gal altward, seems to have no power to it, i have a small control panel that has switch for pump, water heator, and tak levels. If I switch the water heator on the pilot warning light does not come on and the heator does not work I looked for ciruit fuses (Winibago Brave) but to date have not found any. where are the main voltage test points so I can check if I am getting 12 volts to the heator. and work backward from there. thanks

One common spot for trouble is if you have the thermal cut off switch.(looks like a resistor in plastic sleeve, and runs from power to thermostat terminal.) Make sure there is power at thermostat terminal where it connects, if not check opposite end where connected, if yes, remove it from circuit and connect remaining spade directly to thermostat terminal and try it that way. Of course you've checked all fuses in main fuse panel I'm assuming.

I bought a brand new house and the gas water heater seems to be stuck in vacation mode.

Copy following link to troubleshoot by type of gas control valve, instructions how-to-light-water-heater, including error codes etc:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent
To reset the intellivent gas control, press and hold both arrow buttons for about 5 seconds
This water heater requires pilot flame. Look through site glass and upward (or use mirror) to see if pilot is ON and burning clear blue flame and not lazy yellow flame.
Check that gas shut-off is parallel to gas line:
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Gas-water-heater-89-valve-2.jpg
Check if outlet has 120Volt, and that polarity of outlet is correct. Power vent water heaters require correct polarity: use circuit analyzer. Check if there is ground continuity between ground and manifold tube (center tube that connects between burner and gas control valve).
Scroll to top of same link to read about FV system and air intake cleaning. Must have good supply of incoming air.
Same page half way down has troubleshoot section for pressure switch testing, blower troubleshoot etc. The pressure switch and blower communicate electrically with gas control thermostat to determine when to release gas to burner where pilot ignites gas, causing poisonous combustion by-product to vent outdoors and help nature.
This model has thermopile instead of thermocouple. Basically thermopile is several thermocouples. When heated, thermopile generates enough current to run small electronic circuit inside gas control valve. This circuitry is very common in hvac units but fairly recent to water heaters. Advantage is error code troubleshoot and more optional controls, for example future response to in-home zwave remote controls and home automation

Atwood 6gal self ignite wont stay lit

Are you sure of model number, as it doesn't indicate electronic ignition. That said, if you do have electronic ignition, there is a small thermal cut-out in power line (brown wire) to thermostat terminal. It is inside the clear plastic sleeve and is connected between power wire and thermostat. Pull it apart and remove that thermal cut out temporarily and just connect wire direct to thermostat terminal where other end came off. Now try it, if it ignites and runs good, replace that thermal cut out. If no better, get back to me. That thermal cut out is a safety device in case of flame up, so be sure to replace it once diagnosis confirms it is defective.

Where can I get the wiring diagram for the Laing Autocirc? I want to wire in a momentary switch so that when I am ready to get in the shower I hit the switch and the pump runs until the water is warm and...

If you have the same Autocirc product I have, then it cannot be taken apart. The timer seems to be connected and sealed together with the pump. If yours is different, answer back with the wires that you can see and we'll see if the timer can be by-passed.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-recirculation-system.html

With the ordinary Grunfos-type pump that is not on a timer, you can add a switch and have the pump work on demand as you describe.

And they make a product that does the specific job you describe. It's called a Demand Pump. Link above shows two different types at page bottom.

I have not tested either Demand Pump shown. They operate on-demand ... when you activate the pump, the pump quickly brings water over from the hot water heater.

So the Demand Pump has a higher volume pump than the Autocirc or Grunfos.

I question a two things about the Demand Pump. 1) How will the increased pump pressure affect local pipes, especially supply tubes under a sink. 2) How HOT does the pump get? If pump gets hot, and it is located under bathroom sink next to paper goods, then that is a hazard. Some regional building codes don't allow ceiling light bulbs in closets because the bulbs get hot and start fires when people pack their closets full.

Try removing the thermocouple where it attaches to gas control, and spray a little WD-40 in the hole, then spin a rolled up small piece of steel wool in the hole as well, then blow it out with compressed air if you can. Then reconnect thermocouple. Make sure thermocouple tip is getting good flame under it, and if that doesn't cure it, then it's time to replace gas control.

Problem is i have a gravity fed system and yesterday connected a cold water line for an evaporative cooler to the cold water line coming of it. now there isnt any hot water

water will always find its own level and take the path of least resistance. if your hot water tank inlet is higher than the swamp cooler this may be your problem. you can try a line resrtiction at the cooler or a twelve volt rv pump with a battery and solar charger and an on off switch.know someone with this set up and it seems to work well.

How does the pump work on a back boiler?

I'm not sure how the wiring goes without being there to see the unit, but I almost bet that your system is working with a pressure switch to turn the pump on. When there is a drop in the pressure of the water by lets say running a faucet, then the switch senses that drop and turns the pump on. The pressure switch will be located in a small box by itself. When you are looking at the pump, there should be some conduit running to it with wires inside it. The conduit should enter the pump from the rear at some point. I hope this helps!
