Question about Dryers

1 Answer

We have a maytag dryer that started out with a clunking noise that sounded like a rock tumbler... All of the sudden it got quieter and now there is not much heat. It took almost 4 hours to dry a load and the dial never moved. What might be wrong with my dryer?

My older Maytag dryer is making the classic rumbling noise when running. Heat seems fine. I can turn the tumbler by hand and sound like one of the tumbler wheels is vibraiting or wobbeling. what else...

Replace all drum wheels. I would replace the idler pulley and belt if the belt looks worn. Check front and rear felts for excessive wear. Check the blower wheel. Here is a link that should help

Maytag atlantis dryer all the sudden will not turn on or make any noise.

I suspect the door safety switch is broken. If not check one, some dryers have two, high limits. These are safety switches that keep the tumbler from spinning when door opened, and prevent the dryer from overheating

Dryer makes clunking noise when it starts and stops. Also noisy during the drying cycle. It's a Maytag

May need a new blower wheel.
The wheel is mounted to the motor and if it is stripped out it will not move air past the heat element.
Have it checked before the heat element fails.

We have replaced the ball bearing and plate for the drum, also the guides and felt. Once the dryer is started it makes a noise like a plastic piece clunking around and a loud stop,

You do not list the model number, or even the brand, so it is difficult to give an informed response, but here is what I am guessing, based on the info you post:
There may be items, like coins, inside the baffels in the drum. Generally, you can remove a few screws on the outside of the drum to take the baffels / fins / tumblers / blades (whatever you might wish to call them) off to remove the items, reinstall them, and have a quieter dryer again.

I have a Maytag Atlantis gas dryer. It makes a squealing sound when it's on. The longer the dryer is on, the more intermittent the sound is. What could the problem be, belt or bearings?

All dryers have to have a way of allowing the tumbler (that's the thing you put the clothes in) to turn freely, not all of them are the same tho, some use bearings, some use slides, others use rollers. Over time these rollers will need to be oiled, the slides will get thin and start metal to metal contact causing a noise, The rear bearings will then start to make their way to china and cause the tumbler to rub into the heating element and OUCH! These things will cause the motor to prematurely DIE! Its best to examine the dryers, rollers, and slides when you first hear the noise, but who does?

Fixed the clutch. Now has a rock crushing sound when spin starts

Hello askeng,

I would try to fault isolate the noise area by removing the front cover (watch the belt) and start a Spin Only cycle with no clothes in the wash basket. It’s a 10 minute cycle so let the wash basket spin up to full RPM. Do you hear the rock crushing sound? If it sounds like the problem area is the clutch pulley area terminate the cycle with the Off Key. Check for any trace of a water or transmission oil in that area.

If that’s not the cycle causing the excessive noise I would next do a quick wash with no clothes in the wash basket and see if the grinding/rock crushing sound is coming from the tumblers in wash cycle, maybe some change under the tumblers.

When you cleaned/re-lubed the one-way roller clutch bearings how did they look? Did the Spinner Shaft Coupler (I show it in this post) rotate freely CW in both the upper bearing (if used) and the lower bearing? Let me know your findings and if you have additional questions. Rich

Grinding noise from under tumbler

One of the retaining rings on the motor clamp/drum bearing assembly had probably broken, the machine must be taken apart to access to the motor/bearing assembly and fix the part.
The job should be done by a technician.

Using the machine in this condition can cause more damage to motor/ drum bearings.

Here is the diagram.

here you can buy the parts.
