Question about Hayward SAND FILTER, PRO SERIES

Pressure doesn't last & seems to blow out cloudy, dingy water

The pressure doesn't last more than an hour, even right after back flushing and rinsing. And when I look at the water shooting into the pool, it looks very cloudy. Also, even when pump is running, it doesn't seem to be filtering well, as there are still bugs and a film on top of the water. I've had the pool 3 years and have never changed the sand in the filter. Could that be the problem?

Please open your filter and remove the top six inches of sand and replace with fresh filter media sand. You should be able to use the balance of the sand ... however, if it too is nasty, sand is relatively cheap and you rely on it a lot.

What is the pressure when you are running? What is your "start up pressure"? (the pressure when the filter is clean). Lets say it is 20 PSI start ... you should back wash when the pressure goes to 30 and the pressure should go back to 20 or 21 as a normal course of events after back wash

Is your water properly balanced? metal is out of the water? Proper TA and pH? TA should be about 100, pH about 7.4 ... CL 2 or 3 ppm. Do you use cynauric acid? should be about 35. Is your pool plaster ... MAKE SURE YOU GET RID OF METAL BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING. Metal out works best with high pH and no CL. For a plaster pool CA shold be around 300

I hope this helps you ... thanks for your interest in FixYa.com

If you are on city treated water, sand will last aprox. 7 years, if on well water typically 3 - 5 years. so yes, could be a sand issue. also, double check that the there is no water trickling out the backwash / drain outlet of the filter, this could indicate that the diverter valve gasket (spider gasket) could be worn and cause sand from the filter to flow to the pool. this is a common problem if you move the position selector often with the pump still running - the pump should always be off when moving the handle. good luck!

Pump is blowing cloudy water back into pool

Cloudy water is the bane of sand filters!. I suggest letting filter run day and night. Do not backwash until the pressure rises 8 - 10 pounds above clean starting pressure. Do not try to vacuum or stir up the sediment. when water clears, vacuum to waste. Keep the hose running while vacuuming. A dirty filter is a better filter (up to a point). At a higher pressure the filter will trap more of the fine particles that are clouding your water.

Pressure on the EC65 is always high

Certainly sounds like a filter problem. Here's a couple of things to try.#1. i don't know how you cleaned the filters but clean them again with a good filter cleaner/degreaser.#2. After a good cleaning, get a bucket large enough to hold the filter fingers in and give them an acid bath. They recommend a 20 to 1 ratio of water to acid (muriatic) but I personally don' think thats strong enough. Use a good amount of acid and let the fingers soak for a good ten or fifteen minutes. (always add acid to water, not water to acid) Rinse and reassemble filter. If that does'nt solve problem, I think it's time to replace filter.

Thats strange, F10 means no cold fill.
Ok back to basics, you can check the pressure switch by taking off the tube and gently blowing into it and I mean gently, you should hear a click if its ok - make sure the other end is'nt blocked, blow it out with a cycle pump near the drum end

If your like me your house has a pressure regulator to keep the pumps high cut out pressure from blowing your lines. Also a lot of domestic wells have a filter at the house to keep sediment out.
