Hi Darren. It is a Western Digital hard drive, with 40 gigs, a guy set it up for me and put in 2 partitions without asking me. I have worked with it til now and it is now full on the c drive the other drive I don't use as all my stuff in loaded on c drive. If I had just one I would have double the space, but don't know how to remove it and make all into one drive, any help appreciated. The guy who set it up for me would want £40 to it for me.

    Thanks so far.

I dropped (about 9 inches) my Maxtor 500Gb external HD

Hi John, yes you are right. Your hard-disk is damaged due to the fall. And although your computer won't find it you may still be able to recover some information from the drive.
If running Windows, plug-in your drive and check the taskbar to see if the safely remove icon comes up. if it does then try one of the following:
1. Install and use a good partition recovery software to recover your entire partition to a safe location. I personally use EASEUS partition recovery.
2. Use a file recovery software like R-Studio to try and recover individual files

Note that either of these processes will take a while, so be patient and make sure you have lots of free space on your computer or on another external drive.

I hope this helps, all the best

The Disk Management snap-in is an administrative tool for managing hard disks and the volumes or partitions that they contain. Use the Disk Management snap-in when you want to add, to change, or to remove drive letters on drives, on partitions, or on volumes on your computer's hard disks, CD-ROM drives, and other removable media devices.

Your computer can use up to 26 drive letters, from A through Z. Use drive letters C through Z for hard disk drives. Drive letters A and B are reserved for floppy disk drives. However, if your computer does not have a floppy disk drive, you can assign these letters to removable drives.

Before you modify drive-letter assignments, note the following items:
  • Changing the drive letter of the system volume or the boot volume is not a built-in feature of the Disk Management snap-in.
  • Many MS-DOS-based and Microsoft Windows-based programs refer to specific drive letters for environmental or other variables. If you modify the drive letter, these programs may not function correctly.
How to assign a drive letterTo assign a drive letter to a drive, a partition, or a volume, follow these steps:
  1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.

Note If you do not see Performance and Maintenance, go to step 3. Performance and Maintenance appears in Control Panel only if you use Category view. If you use Classic view, Performance and Maintenance does not appear.
  3. Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then clickDisk Management in the left pane.
  4. Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click Assign the following drive letter if it is not already selected, and then either accept the default drive letter or click the drive letter that you want to use.
  7. Click OK.
The drive letter is assigned to the drive, to the partition, or to the volume that you specified, and then that drive letter appears in the appropriate drive, partition, or volume in the Disk Management tool. Thanks or using FixYa! John

How to make partation in new hard disc using window xp

Hello sir and Windows user, setting up Windows on your hard drive is easy, but there is a better way to setup Windows so you will never have problems later, like back up and searching for flash drives (especially XP users), So before you start setting up Windows, I suggest you partition your hard drive to 2 (or 3) partition, one for the system (usually this is drive C:), one for your data (this is drive D:). Partitioning simply divides your hard drive to several sections, the main advantage is in case your windows system goes bad, or get infected by a virus, you can easily back up your important documents, simply copy all your important files to drive D: (drive D: is not erased if you setup Windows on drive C:)

f08f0b4.gif

for example:
To create a partition, on an XP setup, using a 160GB hard drive, divide your 160GB Hard Drive to 2, Press C to create a partition see picture. 80GB for windows system files and 80GB for data files.

Never setup the entire Windows on drive C: alone. create 2 partition. So before you choose where to setup Windows, there is an option to create another partition, input how much storage space you need for the partition in our example 80GB on a 160 GB drive. then proceed to setup Windows on drive C:. (at this point there are two drives, C: and D:)

On Windows Vista, the backup is automatic, but then again, its much wiser to partition your hard drive.

If I explore the hard drive it shows only 97 gig used and I can not access the other 900 gig. Any ideas? Thanks John

Right-click on My Computer, Manage, Disk Management. Does it show part of the disk as Unallocated Space? If so, you will need to partition/format it. Depending on your Operating System, you can extend your existing partition to include it.

Feke usb size

When the flash memory USB hard drive device appears to malfunction it maybe possible to restore it by reformatting it. Insert the flash or USB hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Healthy.

Wiped out partition on WD500GB My Book

Try using a recovery utility like Acronis or R-Studio. I have used R-Studio alot and it always comes through for me. The drive will be recognised but no drive letter will be assigned. Run the programme and after it scans the drive, select what you want to save and save it to another drive or partition.
That should do it.

Cheers.

Hard drive

Hi,
You can install a software called partition magic and use it to merge the two partitions into one.
But you might need to free some space on your C drive. What you can do is copy (CUT) all your My Documents data and paste it to your D drive or your second drive. This should free a lot of space enough to install partition magic.

You can download the trial version software from http://www.soft32.com/download_151.html
Install it and merge your partitions and then you can uninstall or purchase if you want.

Can't See HDD in Windows Explorer

Afraid Excelstors hard drive repair tool requires the drive to get wiped to fix the errors not like seagate or western digitals, only thing worth trying is put in a windows xp disc and boot off the disc, Press R on the first screen to do a repair in like dos mode. it will take you into a black screen with a dos prompt, type this in CHKDSK C: /R then press enter it will take about 30min-1hr but has a good chance of getting the drive to read.. once complete take out xp disc and restart pc all the best John
