Question about Audio & Video Receivers

2 Answers

I have a Harman Kardon 700 Series amp/pre-amp/tuner system that I want to get repaired ( an HK 770 Twin Torroidal Ultra Wideband DC Amplifier, a matching HK 725 Pre-Amplifier, and a matching HK 710 Tuner) Can I still access parts to repair this system? I tried to order a power swith assembly ( for my HK 710 Tuner) from Harman Kardon via their parts dept., but was told by a Jamie there that this part is no longer available. This is frustrating, as this unit was a great one when it was in working order. There has to be a way to still access parts for this system. Thanks, Randy Wilson Ewing, New jersey

This will take a little homework on your part, but parts for this might be available. I don't kow your model well enough to know whether or not the power switch is generically available. Any possibility you can post a picture? Manufacturers are only required to maintain spare parts for 5-7 years after they stop selling that model. If the part is generic enough, other distributors will carry replacements. If all you need is the power switch, you stand a good chance that a replacemetn is available.
Keep me posted,
Dan

How can I connect a Thorens 145 turntable to it?

Your Harman Kardon AVR 85 doesn't have "phono" inputs. That means that you can not connect a turntable to it directly. You will need a "phono preamp" to amplify the very tiny signal from the phono cart enough for the HK receiver to play it. Something like this:

PYLE PRO PP444 Ultra Compact Phono Turntable Preamp

will do it. There are certainly better ones, like:

Why Harman Kardo HK 3490 goes into DSP voltage protect mode

This amplifier can go into protection if one of the low ohm resistors on the power module that is soldered to the transformer is defect. Check out R951 and R952, they are both 0R47 (0,47ohm). They are often broken and measure some kilo ohms.

Hk 3490 receiver on protection mode....what it means and how to correct that

You can try a factory reset after checking your speaker wires for shorts. The procedure is in your owner's manual. This will most likely not resolve your issue. If you need further assistance, or would like to inquire about repairing your Harman Kardon, please visit my website at audioserviceclinic.com and contact me there. BTW, I worked for Harman, as Technical Support for all Harman, JBL and Infinity products.Thank you.

Harmon kardon hk3270 shuts off after only being on about 10 sec

Disconnect speakers and wires. Bad wiring or defective speakers may be loading the amp down and causing the protection circuits inside to disconnect (no sound). If the HK is heating up (beyond what you perceive as normal) with no wires or speakers connected then you have a problem requiring expert repair.

AVR 1600 receiver won't connect to bose series III EQ

You mean BOSE 901 Series III Active Equalizer; and HARMAN KARDON AVR1600 right?

Sure it will. It goes in a Tape Loop such as Tape Out/In or Video 1 Out/In. But it won't work for anything except analog stereo sound sources as all digital audio is not available to the RECORD OUT jacks when the Tape or Video 1 is activated. AND 901 Active EQ is intended solely for 901's, not any other speaker system

The HK has no Line Level volume-controlled Pre-Outs so you're out of luck if you want the 901's to take part in a multichannel setup, which would require a separate power amp to drive them anyway.

My harman kardon avr 80 ii is powering on and off the 1 ohm in the power suuply of the pre amp is burned can u help me please?

I have a harman kardon avr 80 in mint shape that could possibly be for sale for the right price if you are interested. I really don't want to replace it, considering it is the most well built of all the hk receivers in its time in my opinion. Prob one of the best ever built period. If you are interested give me a price and maybe we can work something out. Ike

Fiber Optic input

No gots. The 3485 is pre-digital stereo-only.

From the manual, page 19

"You may have observed that the HK 3485 is not equipped with digital audio inputs or surround sound decoding. If you prefer the complete home theater experience, you may wish to consider purchasing a fullfeatured Harman Kardon AVR Series audio/video receiver. However, we hope you will find that using a DVD player with the HK 3485 in smaller settings, such as a bedroom or den, surpasses the audio performance of most televisions, including those with onboard stereo speakers."

Harman kardon avr 140 - all displays work but no sound

I have an HK AVR140 all of the displays work, even shows when a digital connection from the Blu-Ray player is connected but no audio comes from the speakers! I found some information that HK does not have DC protection so when there is a problem muting Circuit is initiated on the main Amp. I called HK and they want me to send it in to a service dept that is not close at all. Any ideas? Or is there a way to by-pass the muting circuit somehow?

I am not able find a substitute for my standby transformer.

Is this transformer internal to the Harman Kardon? Or is it something the HK plugs into?

Amplifier/receiver switches off systematically after a few second of use

Sounds like a bad output channel is causing it to go into protect mode. Time to see a repair tech.
